I don't know how you want to interpret this, but back in February a new member asked the same question in this forum. After his second post only he has just vanished, gone with the wind. So he has either become professional thanks other members suggestions and moved on, or maybe it is sign of bad luck asking that question. how to become a professional poker player?

Basically have enough to $$$ to support yourself. Remember some months or weeks are going to be hard etc... So saving and making sure you got enough for periods you go with out winning! I would seriously have at least a years worth of rent / bills / food money etc... Then 10k for Bankroll at least. Maybe more. Just be bloody careful because poker is still a form of gambling (Yes with more control but still taking massive risks which do swing).

I would work a job and work poker part time. I would slowly put money into your poker bankroll while increasing it though the tables. Then you would go through this big process of making sure you can handle the high level you made it too... Yeah it would be a lot of work getting acquainted to the switch of jobs... I don't know. Write an essay on it. Clear your head up and skip all the memorizing.

You wanna be a pro...? Okay. If you wanna be a pro, you are a pro. There is no panel of certification, you know how to play poker... I would say you're qualified. This site is about learning how to win, you can be a pro and still lose. Concentrate on becoming the best player you can be, dedicate yourself to the game... learn, and in two years, if you're still fired up about it, you're winning consistently at your limit (by then hopefully you could be up to 100nl), then consider going pro and doing it for a living. Oh yeah, and move to Vegas.

I think you shouldnt even dream about this because you just not ready, to me you would know if your ready to be a poker player when you dont need to ask about it. Meaning you probally dont have anywhere close to the roll or game needed righty now keep playing and learning and if you become the next Durr, great! |

My first suggestion would be to read this: http://www.cardschat.com/going-poker-pro.php I could say a lot more, but the above link says a lot,and unless you are rich, dont quit the day job, or if you dont have one, dont risk your savings, since, as Mr McClusky said, the fact that you are asking what it takes means you DO NOT have what it takes. This is not meant to be arrogant, but the best way to lose your money is to convince yourself that you are better than you are. Play at least 500,000 hands (a pro will do this perhaps in only a few months) and if you are making money, continue. (And be analyzing your play ALL THE TIME) Its like Martial Arts. A little knowledge can be more dangerous than no knowledge at all. Good Luck! Oh yea, as Dark Side said....change your name....lol

Why? its a hard life. what u see on tv isnt the whole story. lolol. and alot of those pros that u see on tv dont make a lot anyway. lolol ur better off getting a job that u can rely on for steady paycheck and if ur really lucky 1 with healthcare. play poker on the side. u could have downswings that could last for weeks or even longer lolol while playing playing poker and still be a good player. that could be really bad for u if u got to pay rent, mortgage, food, electricity, water etc. and if ur in school -tuition lolol . do u really want lady luck dictating whether u can take care of these obligations? well. . . not me lolol. u could pick up Mark Blades "professional poker:the essential guide for playing for a living" as he wrote a book addressing ur thread. its not a very interesting read but u can find out about the ups/downs of playing poker for a living. gl
