The preflop odds that Harrington gives in his book seem a bit of. He reckons that 2 over cards vs. 2 lower cards (i.e AKo vs. 86o) wins 5:3. He did say approximately but I'd like more accurate guidelines. I say that they are inaccurate because of I was playing around with pokerstove and they simply don't add up

In your example 5:3 would be close to right. AKo is about a 63/37 favorite over 86o, which is roughly 5:3. Reduce 5:3 and you get 1.67:1. 37*1.67 = ~62. So 5:3 is a good rounded approximation.

I agree that the 5 to 3 approximation is pretty close to what you will find over 10,000 hands plus.

get pokerstove to calculate hands like that for you. It saves a lot of time doing the math yourself.

Well I played around with pokerstove and I was wrong, 5:3 is fairly close.

I'm not good with ratios at all, can someone please explain how to convert pot odds into a percentage? For example, 1.7:1, what percent is that?

It seems complicated when written out, but just think it through and practice it a couple times and it becomes second nature. You get to the point where you really don't have to calculate it, you can just see the ratio and subconsciously estimate the percentage and vice-versa.

Taking your example of 1.7:1... (1.7+1)=2.7, 100/2.7=37% (the :1 part). 37%*1.7=63% (the 1.7: part). Or alternatively, for that last step you can just subtract 100%-37%=63% to get the same answer... probably easier that way. So, the answer is 1.7:1 = 63% to 37%. Often written out as 63/37.
