This is a discussion on Poker Tournaments/Casino in LA within the online poker forums, in the General Poker section; I am thinking about visiting LA next year. Are there casinos or places where poker tournamnets take place anyone can recommend?...

I've been playing in and around LA for about 2 months. The Bicycle is the nicest IMO but the rake is ridiculous given the stakes (they take $5 for any post-flop hand regardless of pot size and the buy-ins are restricted to 20x and 40xBB). However, you get free food and the service is good. Commerce has good action but it is like a meat market and they have the restricted buy-in too. Rake is better though. The Hustler is a nice casino but it is in the middle of the ghetto and the crowd has too many "thugs" for me. My favorite so far has been the Morongo but it's closer to Palm Springs. Rake is reasonable, nice poker room, no restricted buy-ins, and it's one of the few 18 and under casinos so there is more action. Pretty much all the casinos out there have daily tournaments. However, unless you drop $250+ they are donk fests for the most part. The casinos encourage buy-ins and set the levels to go up quickly to get them over as fast as possible. Last one I was in I was chip leader at my table, and added on during the break. After the first break I didn't even have 10x BB. There are a lot of casinos out there, go to the poker atlas to see which ones are around where you're going and have tourneys you'll want to play.

Okay I live in Orange County and LA is just miles away ... #1 - the rake is shitty everywhere. A lot of casinos have $5/hand rakes and I've seen it as high as $6 to include money for a dumbass jackpot. #2 - For small stakes cash games action, you can go to Commerce, The Bicycle, Hawaiian Gardens and a few others but stick to one of those three. If you get into San Diego there are much nicer places to play. #3 - Every stupid cash game table out here at small stakes is shortstacked. Meaning the $100 buy-in tables have blinds of $1-2 or even $1-$3. It's retarded. So just be aware of what you are buying into. The best tournaments out here are typically the higher buyins like $100 but you will find $40 tournaments in and around places, just check their websites. Then make sure the structure is good!
