Poker table/chip set recommendations?

Wondering if anyone out there could recommend both a decent chip set and a decent table?

I'm not looking to spend a ton of cash on the table and have even toyed with the idea of trying to build my own from scratch...may still try that.

I have some ideas but I thought I'd toss it out the forum and see if anyone has any they really like?

Because of space considerations I will probably need a folding type for the table sadly. I do not want one of those octagonal ones and ideally it would have a chip tray although that isn't absolutely necessary.

I'll bump this once then let it die.

What's your price range for the chips?

If you're going for <$50 then just get the standard dice chips. I have a set myself and they're pretty heavy (maybe overly heavy), are very durable, and although they're really widely used and obviously pretty cheap quality, they do fine for our home games. Something like these:

500 Clay 11.5 g Dice Poker chips 5 colors in set + MORE - (eBay.ca item 360044269200 end time 25-Apr-08 11:36:25 EDT)

If you're going for mid-range you could look at pokerchips.com. If you're really looking for high-end I'd look at something like Paulsson chips.

Most tables that are foldable are usually pretty trashy. I'd look into either building your own or making some sort of cover for a table you already have in your house. Well that, or buying yourself one, but any decent quality table is pretty expensive (~$500 min)

Build your own table. You'll get exactly what you want and you'll be able to do it relatively cheaply. Everything you every wanted to know about building your own table can be found here - Scott's Poker Table :: Index

As for a chipset, how about having your own customs done.

I just ordered 550 of my own. Here are the designs.

I dropped the resolution to improve load times so the originals are much clearer. They are being printed on ceramic blanks. Total cost is .50/chip and I should have them next week.

If you're interested in doing customs or want more info let me know.

Another Recent Chip Thread - Also, if you have CraigsList in your area, just type in "poker" and search all the For Sale area, you'll probably find some folding tables and chips for discounted prices.

The best way to go is Ebay for buying poker chips, I bought a set very similar to the one in chucks link a long time ago that came with dice, cards, dealer button, key to lock the set and everything for pretty cheap. I almost never have home games here anymore though =(

As far as a table, id definitly say the best way to go is to build just a table top. It would be easy to stick under a bed or something and you could make it to your liking, just get a piece of plywood and put nice cushioning over it, shouldnt be very hard at all.

Here are the ones I use.

They have tables as well, are are pretty consistently the lowest priced supplier of casino merchandise that I have found.

Be very careful to avoid buying a table that is not padded under the felt (most of the folding table 'tops' that don't have legs), as they suck to shuffle and play on.

Here is one that folds in half, is padded, and is relatively inexpensive, should you want the ability to easily transport it (sans van or truck).

Also, see table building book here if you decide not to buy one outright.

Thanks all, lots of good stuff here. I'll let you know what I end up doing.

WV those chips look awesome! Custom chips will definitely be on my list down the road but for now I just want a reasonably priced, but good, set.

I'm buying all this for two reasons..primary reason is so I can practice dealing (both poker and blackjack) and I'm hoping to start up actually hosting a game as well.

Thanks, I can't wait to get my hands on them.

Define reasonably priced. Tournament or cash set (if cash what stakes)? Denoms or no denoms? Do you have any preferences at all (plastic, ceramic, clay)? How secure do your chips need to be (does it matter if any Joe Shmoe can pick them up a Wally World)? Do you have samples? Might want to take a look here Discount Poker Chips, Clay Casino Chips – Discount Casino Gear as their prices are great and I've had only good dealings with them in the past.

The best thing you can do to build a successful home game is to know the rules and stick to them. I'm sure the fact that you're a dealer will go a long way toward making your game very successful.
