An odd question for one of those obscure poker rules...
Texas Holdem - 3 people in pot and I'm middle to act. hand gets checked down on river. First guy announces 9 high card. I have a pair of 8's (my kicker is a three). I show only the 8 for the pair. I am told by a guy not in the hand I must show my hole card. The last to act person has mucked his hand by now and never requested I show my hole card.
I think I am entitled to keep my hole card hidden UNLESS the guy last to act asks me to show??
Who is right??
Also where can I get a full, comprehensive rules book for Texas Holdem?? I have had a couple other odd situations which I would like to think I am knowledgeable for the actual rules.

Not sure about this rule but I have been told I have to show both cars to win before in a poker room at a casino. I dont get why it matters and if you have the winning hand using only one card I feel you shouldnt have to expose the other. Apparently the rules dont agree.

You need to show your cards to claim a pot, whether they were used in the hand or not. This is straight from Robert's Rules of Poker.

I like the rule. It keeps the game balanced. If you want to claim a pot at showdown, you show your cards. If you wanted the pot without giving away your hand, then you should've bet earlier.

Yea talking about showdown rules. Sorry thought that was obv. And yea same as Mr. Handbag I like to keep the show in showdown for several reasons. I don't care if I get called and then the player decides to muck after I table my boat or w/e but if you want to claim the pot then all your precious secrets are going straight out the window.

lets say there are 3 aces on the board and you only show one ace. maybe you are cheating with an ace up your sleeve and have pocket aces but dont want to show you are cheating. showing both cards keeps the game honest imo and is required as others have said.

same thing for the 9 high guy, he would have to show both cards too since he was 1st to act and was called by the other players. 2 cards have to be shown to win and if someone calls you in a showdown and they lose, you can request to see their cards after a muck. just like in bovada you can see the hand history and see the cards of the person that called you, even if they mucked.

It's quite surprising how many live players don't know that. Someone will bet the river, I'll call their obvious bluff, and they'll say something like "what do you have?" and muck their cards when I show. I've gotta start making it a habit to not show until they do. I called them, not the other way around.

this^^ and after they muck, you CAN ask the dealer to flip his cards over for you since he's "required" to show.

ive been watching a lot of poker after dark the last 2 weeks or so and i'm surprised no one on there asks them to flip their cards after a muck or asks the dealer. i'd want to know all the info i could get in a high stakes game like that.....

Yeah for sure! I think the reason it slips my mind is because it is usually in a situation where I put them on a bluff or missed draw and know that I was right when they muck.

This is very casino dependent. Ask about local rules at a casino, home or bar game.

never hurts to make confirm your reads. in most places, if you're calling an opponent they have to show first and you can ask to see their hand if you wish.

You need to show both cards. I believe it's considered Mucked if you don't.

all casinos have different rules regarding showing cards on the river but my opinion is if u call sum1 then they should show but if it goes check check on the river then i'm happy either way

Depend on house rules.

Mostly I believe is you have to show both cards for you to be paid - No show, no pay.

Another, other players have the right to request showing of cards/muck cards. But for poker etiquette, not to use it always of course.

In a casino, unless you make everyone else fold, you will be forced to show both hole cards if you want to win the pot.

This is probably the most generally accepted treatment of the rule in question.

both cards must be showed...i've won a pot before where I had quads and showed one card because my other card was a card that was on the board already, i think it was a 4 of clubs and there was already another 4 of clubs so the deck was faulty containing two 4c ...i only noticed on the river, and call me unethical or whatever....i aint no saint, it was a big pot and i won......to eliminate situations like this, i think both cards should be shown.

The reason you don't see it often is that most live players consider it a breach of etiquette. Yes, technically you have the right to see the cards, but most people will think you're kind of a douche for enforcing that right.

I can remember a spot years back from the televised portion of the Aussie Millions, when Andy Black asked the dealer to turn over a mucked hand at showdown. The dealer did it because he had to, but pretty much every player at the table chastised Black for asking in the first place.

Either muck or show both cards. That is the standard choice to claim a pot.
