Poker Books Not on Poker
I remember seeing a post about books that are helpful in strengthening a player's mind-set, on and off the felt.
Could someone link me to such post if you know what I'm referring to, or suggest books that I may be looking for. Thanks. |

Dr. Alan Schoonmaker has a few books out that focus on psychology as it can be applied to poker behavior. Your Poker Worst Enemy (SPOILER ALERT: it's you), Poker Winners are Different, and Your Poker Best Friend. He talks about the ways that we get in our own way a lot, and how we can be proactive in forming good habits. I find his poker examples to often be inadequate, but that doesn't remove the value from his advice on his professional topic, psychology.

re: Poker Books Not on Poker
Quote:
The Art of War by Sun Tzu is one many players and pros think is a great study in mindset, as well as strategy. Matter of fact, a phrase from that book is quoted at the start of Chapter 2 in The Poker Mindset by Ian Taylor and Matthew Hilger, another that is highly recommended by poker players regardless of ranking. Here's the quote: "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." There is also Mind's Power Unleashed by Sam Chauhan, which I recently purchased but have not yet read. The author is gaining quite a reputation as a "professional mindset trainer". He has written a number of truly inspiring articles for Bluff Magazine and pro Antonio Esfandiari is a client. From the articles I have read by Chauhan, my fave quote so far is: "There is no such thing as failure, only feedback." Isn't that great?! Finally, I think that No-Limit Life by Charlie Shotten is a wonderfully uplifting book about attitude about and orientation toward not only poker, but most importantly life. Whenever my chips are down, on or off the felt, I turn to this book. ![]() |

Barry Greenstein's Ace On The River contains very little poker strategy - it's mostly about the mindset and life skills that a successful poker player needs along with advice on living in the poker world.
