Poker books at discount? I'm having a difficult time finding used poker books that offer a significant discount from new book prices, much less new books at decent discount. Does anyone have recommendations for sources that do? As it stands, with what I'm able to find, it seems reasonable to go with purchasing two new at Amazon in order to get free shipping. My only requirement for a used books is that there are no underlines or broken spines. Even with that plus shipping, the savings over new is minimal.

Hey, i dunno if your just short of cash or like collecting poker books? I buy my poker books from new, but iv also downloaded books before (not a big fan of doing it) and just reading them in PDF format from the pc.. I dont know if thats what you want to do? If so, i can guide you on how to get them without shelling out money for a book.

I do need to have the books in hand. I want to underline and have them where I can study them over again as much as I need. So PDF won't work for me. I surely wish it did, though. I wouldn't say I'm short on cash, per se. I will be, however, if I buy all the books I'm interested in.

If you're okay with used books, I second the eBay/Half.com recommendation. However I'm somewhat of a book nit myself, and unless I can inspect the book beforehand I'm not keen on buying them used. For new books, you're going to have a very hard time beating Amazon. Brick & mortar sellers like B&N and Borders usually charge sticker price, even on their websites. I have memberships at both B&N and Borders that give me discounts, and unless I have a promo coupon to use with it, Amazon is still nearly always cheaper. It also helps that I have an Amazon Prime membership, which gets me free 2nd Day shipping on anything, no matter the cost, or $4 overnight shipping. I buy a ton from Amazon, plus have an Amazon CC that pays me rewards in gift certs, so with all the savings it's a no-brainer for me to shop there. I even buy toiletries and some grocery items there now, lol.

I buy the majority of mine with Borders promo codes. It seems like once every other week or so I get one emailed to me that saves me anywhere between 25 and 50% off. I'll dig around in my email and see if I can find any that are working right now. That way I get new books without having to deal with conditions(I remember I got one poker book a while back off ebay that reeked of smoke every time I opened it for like 2 months, then my hands would smell...I ended up throwing it away and got the book new off Borders.) Edit: Use this promo code( BUA8141L ) at Borders.com and you'll get 33% off of ONE item. It will only work until 8/19(tomorrow), so choose wisely and fast Last edited by absoluthamm : 18th August 2010 at 5:40 PM. Reason: Freebie

You might also check out http://www.alibris.com. They are a seller's market for book sellers, new and used, similar to Amazon's Marketplace. I just found Tommy Angelo's "Elements of Poker" brand new from a seller there for $22.95 + $3.99 s/h, a few bucks less than Amazon's $29.95 price (one of the rare times that Amazon sells for publisher's price, although they do have the Kindle version for $9.99).

Ok. Shopped around some, checked out all the options and it looks like Amazon is the way to go for this particular book. Thank you so much absoluhamm for the code. The price turns out to be the same as Amazon so I'll just go with that since I already have account there. My son has been pressing me to sign up at Borders just to have the promos available. We're both book junkies. Found a good deal on half.com but I couldn't find any specifics on condition of the book so I didn't feel comfortable buying sight unseen. I find myself in book blitzing mode and it's beginning to add up so I'm getting hypersensitive about cost. Dmorris, what's Amazon CC? Thanks for the suggestions, everybody.

I still keep the B&N and Borders memberships for when I'm browsing their store while waiting for the wife to shop or whatever, and just have to leave with a book. And for the coffee shop discounts. And yeah, the Amazon CC is their credit card. |

re: Poker books at discount? I heartily endorse Amazon as well. Another great place to buy discounted books is Edward R. Hamilton, Booksellers, in Falls Village CT. They sell remainders (brand new books that the publisher no longer wishes to sell or warehouse) and you can't beat the prices--from 1/2 to 3/4 or even less off. No matter how many books you order at a time, the shipping and handling is always $3.50. I've been a very happy customer for years. I searched their website and right now they have over 15 poker books so you might want to check there. Next week they may have more or less; you never know. If you are an avid book reader like I am you'll be in heaven--thousands and thousands of titles in every category you can imagine.

THe local library where I live (pop. of 7,500) actually has Harrington on CashGames even, along with PhilGordon's books and a bunch of others. I've also ordered up dozens of books via an 'inter-libary' book loan (I can get anything up to copyright Jan.1 2009), some of them two & three times actually. I almost always grab the book & read the book from the library prior to purchasing it. Some I've gone out and bought after... and others I've just loaned it out again... & again. There's only a handful of books that I knew I'd want to have to keep for my own... and just went out & bought them (usually thru Amazon.. although I have purchased a couple at PokerXfactor and received a 72hr. all access pass to their vids.. < this was a huge bonus for me even though it cost more than Amazon as I made GREAT used of the vids. (and they actually gave me 5days.. not just the 72hrs. as advertised). |
