Playing for a living, Anybody on here?

Just curious as to how many people on here play poker for a living. How much do you make and what stakes do you play at? By living I mean your only sourse of a quasi substantial amount of money.

I do. But I live in a poorer country so I don't need that much money to live

My living does come from playing and dealing mostly in live cash games/tournements. As the economy has gone to hell in a hand basket, I found that my cash game skills are paying off. I enjoy both sides of the rack but the "safe side" of the rack is a garuentteed win . As you bonus get to see all the ppl you would normally play against and pick up on their tells and get tipped in the process. Thats just another "tip" as when you play against them at some future date you `ve got there number and can pick them off. Sneaky huh... LOL!! My on-line play is definately improving and hope to be seeing you all sometime soon at the tables. So untill then good luck. Oh and the level of cash games I deal and play in are $2/$5 no and $1/$2 no. I make dealing in a 10 hr session approximenttly $300 to $500 per game depending on the players that particular game.

I dont play for a living but currently unemployed so play and earn enough to keep the bailiffs away lol

Must me interesting to play for a living, I don't think I personally know anyone who does so!

Part-time living on mine

Im aspiring to be able to make a living off poker. It sounds great but it does have its downfalls.

I did for almost 2 years. It has paid for most of my house and a lot of the things in it. I have even finished 3rd in a WSOP Circuit event at Caesar's Palace in a $550bi to cash for $15K plus.
It was as miserable a time as I can remember playing in casinos to make a living. there are no happy people and all have their headphones on and hoods pulled up, no conversation, nothing. Blah.
I went back to a JayOhBee, and play part time now. I just won a $50bi sng for winner take all $500 last time I played. :-)

Funny you say that, I would often see dealers from other casinos playing. And I always thought how they could pick up on a lot as they dealt to me in the past, and now playing against me.

it would be great to make a living playing poker. But i think part time would be best.

i don't comedy for living, but would like to do this for make my life luxurious.

i started playing for a living but found that i need alot more self disapline. i managed to get a bankroll started but let my greedy side take over, playing to for too long getting tilted. my game i belive to very good but still need practise.

They could certainly pick up on tells better than the average Joe. But they could do even better if they played at the casino they worked at, where most of the players are regulars or frequent that casino only. Wonder if it's against their employee policy to allow their dealers to play at their own casino. Then again, would you sit down at a table with someone who's been a dealer for you, or if you even knew that he was one?

Since my 3 month try at making a living at poker only netted me about $1000, I was forced to go back to work today.
Try sitting on your ass for 3 months playing poker, then ripping off a 32 square roof. I'm in so much damn pain !

Well 32 square ft isn't that big really (only about 5' x 6.4') so not much to complain about there. Although after re-reading, maybe you meant 32'x32 which indeed would be a major PITA.


And about the dealers playing, at the only casino within driving range of my home the dealers typically sit in at an open spot when they are on their break between tables and play on the tips they received during their dealing session. This I find to be really cool of them because it puts that money back on the table for the players to have a chance at getting it back.

playing poker for a living is ****ing tough. no matter how good you are, a nasty downswing is so much more painful if you have no other income. even a modest side income makes a lot of difference, psychologically and financially.

Usually yes, it's a policy that dealers aren't allowed to play at the casino they work at. I know it's definitely the case at Crown in Melbourne.

As for whether you'd sit down with a dealer... again probably yes because most dealers (obviously I'm generalising here, but go with it) are action junkies and that's always Good For The Game.

And no, I don't make a living from playing poker. I make a decent amount dealing it as a second job though.

The wife has a good job so I have had a pretty decent safety net. I've been doing it for about 18 months and have done well playing live and been horrible online. They opened a casino closer to home about four months ago so it's been a huge help.

I can honestly say though that I don't want to do it much longer and have started considering job offers. I've quit playing online completely (because I'm very weak online) and have really soured on sitting in a casino w/ a bunch of miserable SOBs. I enjoyed working much more than this.

Playing poker for a living is no easy thing. If i had no family, no wife and was single, the amount I made this year would have me sitting comfortably well. I am not saying I am not sitting comfortably now and def could survive off of just my poker winnings as of now, but there is so much to realize that no one realizes when managing a poker career.

1. BRM (money management not just in poker)
2. Time in real life, which is seriously important
3. continuously staying on your game/studying
4. taxes

I personally don't but someday would like to. I have brought 10$ up to 500$ at least 10 times in the past couple months but I always end up going to bigger tables and losing it because I think that I am doing good and then just end up getting runner runnered or rivered with big hands and lose it all.

as long as i earn a profit it's all good, but i don't even consider poker as a lifestlye, it is just too shitty emotionally in my opinion... but if i can earn a few grand a year playing poker a few hours a week while enjoying it and limiting it only to that....

Alot of people can do that but you really have to have the patients and the understanding of the game to do it. I thought about it I just dont have the betting part down packed once, once I do I should be good. But a real good suggestion is to go to a real cascino and actually play a real table rather than online because you can learn alot, I've learned alot of things there. Just a piece of advice.
