Is player stat tracking software commonplace?

I just finished reading "Winning Low-Limit hold em", outdated by 4 years. It mentioned pokertracker and other software that lets you see how passive/aggressive/tight/loose other players are (How many times they see flop etc.), but I feel like it'd have to be a lot more widespread by this point.

Does everyone playing $2+ limit holdem pretty much use it? Half? 25% of people?

I'm definitely downloading something because it's got to be really helpful, just want an idea of if others are using it or if it's against the rules in most poker sites?????

I'd hazard a guess that 25%+ of players on this site use Poker Tracker regularly. But, CC members are not indicative of online poker players in general. Ie, they are actually taking steps to improve their game, which most players aren't. So, I'd guess that only about 10-15% of players on a given site are using Poker Tracker or similar software.

That being said, once you determine that someone is a regular, multi-tabler, or high-stakes player, that percentage goes up considerably.

I would think that at $1/$2 limit half would be using something (perhaps more now that the beta of PT3 is free for 60 days).

How useful is it though? Can you tell if someone's essentially a bad player or a good player with it, tight/loose or passive/aggressive?

Very useful, and absolutely after you have a good number of hands (ideally at least 100) you can make decisions based on their numbers.

Cooool I'm definitely getting it.But I'm still wondering: how many people at $3-6+ limit games have it?

The higher the limit go's up the more player will have it. At 3/6 I would hazard a guess that well over half do. The best part for begginer/novice is the software will help you to look at your own game. I find Poker Tracker the best but there are others, PokerOffice and Hold'em Manager. I think they all run about 60 to 80 dollars and are worth the investment if you are serious about playing.
