Phil Laak wins WSOPE Event #1! Event #1: £2,650 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold'em saw a prizepool of 610000£, with the winner taking home a total of 170,802£. The final table saw these 6 player fighting for the bracelet (no specific order): Chris Bjorin, Ilan Rouah, David Peters, Willie Tann, Andrew Pantling and Phil Laak. Andrew Pantling and Phil Laak went heads-up, both players going up and down with the chip count and chip lead, in the final hand Phil Laak had the chip lead, Andrew raised from the button and Phil Laak moved all in, and he showed K of diamonds and 5 of clubs, Andrew shows A of hearts and 9 of hearts, flop came 744 with 2 hearts giving Andrew a nice chance to double up and be back in this thing, but the turn was the 5 of diamonds giving Laak the lead in the hand, the river did not help Andrew and Phil Laak won his first bracelet and 170,802£. Well done Unabomber. Also Liv Boeree came in 19th in this event, winning 5,624£. EDIT: i got my news here http://uk.pokernews.com/live-reporti...limit-hold-em/

Pretty impressive seeing as this was Phil just over a month ago.... ![]() Professional poker player Phil Laak was hospitalized on Thursday August 5th,2010 after an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) accident. Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Brian Rast, Alec Torelli, David Wells, and three others (named Lee, Tony and Dave) all geared up for a camping trip in Oregon, according to Esfandiari. The details are unclear, but it appears that Laak lost control of his ATV, sustaining major injuries including broken bones and lacerations to his right eye. Card Player spoke to Esfandiari, who was bedside with Laak in the hospital, on Friday about his current condition. “We were following Dave and Tony on the ATVs and we were keeping up very well,” explained Esfandiari. “We went over a sand dune, but there was a drop hidden behind it. It could have happened to either of us, honestly. Phil tried to jump off in mid-air, but he ended up landing on his bike. His elbow is broken and his wrist is all jacked up. His eye is also really messed up. Had it been one millimeter off, he’d probably be blind.” Despite the horrific accident, Laak is apparently in good spirits. “He is handling it all very well,” said Esfandiari. “He was even cracking jokes with the police and paramedics who were on the scene. He wants to fly home tonight [Friday], but they aren’t sure if they will let him. We might have to drive.” Laak’s Twitter page chronicled the following. “In Victoria, 23 min flt to Vancouver where I will catch a flt to Oregon for rafting trip w the boys.” “Hmmmm…. My crew. Going rafting…” “Atv accident, massive arm injury and lacerations to eye in oregon. Life is good” “Stitches forthcoming. Could have been worse I’m lucky to be in one piece”

So deserve it Phil Laak is one of the most popular players, so it only natural that he finally get one. He is also a very great player who should of been had one. Finally over the hump, maybe now with his skills and new refined luck, he will actually start rolling in them bracelets. Maybe that huge accident took away the last of his extreme bad luck. Well, congrats to him on winning his first.

I like Phil Laak, as he was very good for the beginning of the World Poker Tour, and I'm glad he won. However, I'm glad I don't have to be around him. I can't even watch High Stakes Poker anymore when both he and Esfandiari are playing because they don't shut up. The game/show is much better when they're not there. Think about it: when you're trying to concentrate on watching Phil Ivey play, do you really want to have to hear Esfandiari and Laak gripe about each other? It makes me wish Ivey would take all their money quicker.
