Online Sites...Am I doing Something Wrong??? I have posted a couple of threads about the house games I attend and the issues I have with them . Starting about a year or two ago I would deposit 100 on fulltilt( atleast twice a month) . Im always losing money, I play well at casinos and home games. Am I playing the wrong games , I usally play 6 player tournaments. Should I play another mode ( well its obvious I should) So I guess the real question is what mode should I try to increase my bankroll. Thanks in advance.

re: Online Sites...Am I doing Something Wrong??? poker Online poker is tougher than casino or homegame poker in my opinion. And as a beginner you shouldn´t play the 6max games, try full ring first. The normal sng´s (stt´s) are the easiest way to make money at the lower stakes, give it a try !

You're playing too far outside your bankroll to manage the swings. Last night I didn't cash in 8 SNGs in a row, then the next 7 I won 3, came second in 2, and third in 1. This just shows you need a bankroll large enough to withstand this sort of battering. Some would say have 25-50 buyins for SNGs. I would go as far as 100, especially if you're just starting out online. Look into SNG strategy on cardschat. There's definitely a lot more to it than you realise. And home games are a joke in general, $5-$10 SNGs online would be of a much higher standard than any I've played in. Good luck

In six player games you have to be more active and have confidence in your postflop play since you will prob see more flops. The blinds come around faster and this leads to more action. Are you playing in the wrong games? Possibly, I would start at the 2$ games if I was you at least that way you will get more games in for your 100$ and I would consider trying a good few games at 9 player and see how you do there. When a lot of my friends play poker they think you should be throwing chips around and playing many hands etc, the sad truth of most poker games is that to start profiting you have to play a somewhat solid maybe boring at times game chosing you hands or times to play hand wisely in you want to profit and then learning how and when to go LAG. If you want to profit I suggest thinking about what hands your losing on and what hands you should be playing and in what positions. Basically at the micros play ABC poker.

re: Online Sites...Am I doing Something Wrong??? poker I always start with sit-n-go's usually ranging from 1 to no more than 4 dollars to get into to, if I can't seem to cash in at least 1 out of every 4 I play, I start to go after the double or nothing tournaments, if the site you play at offers them that is, the reason I like them is if you can get past the 5th spot at the table, all the spots above that pay out the same from 1st place to 4th, and its usually double what you paid to get in, I hope this helps, good luck at the tables.

Play lower stakes and read up on some strategy IMO. If you're putting $100 on I'd probably stick to $2 SnGs. Play just the one game type and just at those stakes until you're comfortable that you're beating the game and you've got enough in your bankroll to move up. Note that it can take well over 500 games (and probably over 1000) to establish your true ROI and winrate in SnGs so it can take some time. Be patient, work on your game and you'll reap the rewards though. If you come across some tricky hands try posting them over in the tournament hand analysis section for comment, we've got a few very solid SnG players who provide regular feedback in there. Try not to get too hung up on the differences between your success live and online - the differences in skill across different stakes and the differences in sample sizes make it pretty hard to compare the two directly.

play land games My advice would be to play land based card rooms. Online poker is not real life odds. No matter what others may tell you. The only people online who really make money are those who promote poker sites. Most poker rooms will pay you for getting your friends to join and spend their money on the site. If you get enough of your friends and others to join and play under your sign up name---you are then making the poker site money and will be placed on their VIP list. Then and only then will you find that you can win. Play free rolls and win some cash --then see how fast you lose it online. Do this over and over again until you are convinced. If you can bring a steady stream of new players to a poker room-------watch how fast you become one of the best poker players of all time.

Total nonsense, imo. I can`t recall that I have ever recommended a friend, but I have cashed out many thousands of dollars from online poker, as have several of the other regulars here at Cardschat. Online poker is much tougher than casinos. Casino card rooms are often populated by tourists who have had too much to drink and are spewing chips, whereas online poker rooms have a solid core of players who practice long hours and who read and study at sites like Cardschat. If you can`t win online, don`t look for conspiracies. Examine your own standard of play. |

Some sites online will allow you to have your own private tourney with your friends ect. You pick the name time and buy in amount then let all your friends know---make it password protected so only your friends are invited to play---This to me is the only way to make certain that you are playing a fair game online---not to mention it would be great playing with all your friends with no outsiders online or reason for site cheats. You could make it a weekly thing with a few friends and have your very own private room. This would be the only way I would put money online---I could not see cheating going on with only your friends invited to a password protected tourney . No site cheats either as there would be no way for them to have a site player at a private event. If you have enough friends who like to play online----maybe you could set it up. I don't know enough people who play poker to have one. I have thought about it--and there seems to me that there would be no reason or way to cheat a private password protected tourney among a group of friends. Hope this helps. Good luck.

As I am sure you know, I was responding specifically to your contention that online poker rooms are in some way rigged to favour those who introduce their friends. You seek now to change the focus of the discussion. Should we interpret that to mean that you withdraw your earlier remarks ? I am entirely calm, by the way, and in no sense "ranting". |

Back on topic for a sec before the online poker being rigged nonsense continues. OP, check out this thread Bankroll too low for SNG ? for an idea of BR management. It sounds like you're allowing your ego to get the best of you and playing above your head from the start. I've been there and done that AND gone broke before with a couple hundred bucks. It takes discipline, patience, and good play to grow a BR from a small amount but it can be done......I'm doing it right now and I started with a $20 BR. FYI, the advice I ultimately took in this thread is the 50 buyins per SNG before I move up.....it just seems safest and like someone above me said, I want to be able to withstand a bad variance streak. To Sherbert: think about this for a minute. IF online poker was really rigged, don't you think poker communities would have figured this out by now and damned it to the masses of poker players? Also, what business sense does it make for the sites to be "rigged" I think UB is still taking a hit for allowing that poker pro (forget his name) to basically steal a ton of money online because he had access to see hole cards when he was a UB sponsor. For the record, UB DID ban that player after the situation came to light in an attempt to show they're NOT rigged.

Reading through the forums & reading this guy's posts.... keep seeing a similiar theme to them. Wish I held the 26oz. Estwing cuz I'd be dropping it down here in a heartbeat. OP, stick to one format (ie. 2nl FR cash tables, or $2 SNG/STT). Keep playing that one format & read up on everying you can get your hands on. Play it til' you know it inside & out. I think you'll find your results will be much better (as opposed to trying a few different games/formats). |

re: Online Sites...Am I doing Something Wrong??? poker i was having the same problem at pokerstars. i got my bankroll up to $400 from $0 but i up my limits thinking i cud ride it out or that the higher stakes tables wud have better players. not the case. just lower limits for $100 bankroll play around $1 sngs or $1-$2 tourneys n if ur a patient player play full ring while more agressive players prefer 6-max

Ok a hundred bucks and your playing 5-10 dollar buy ins, I think that is too much, no wonder your going broke, at 10 bucks you would get 10 games, I would start with $1.20 cent games and no more than 2 bucks a game. I have been playing on pokerstars alot lately, I love there 10 cent games, by being a cheap skate I am, I have manage to build a 30 dollar bank roll. does not sound like much but I started with nothing, same as full tilt, I have 35 bucks on full tilt and I started with nothing. Thanks to CC free rolls I was able to build a little here a little there, dude save your dame money, a 100 bucks buys a lot beer, if you cant build a bank roll from scratch why waste your money, just my opinion, but good luck.

To the OP: As said you need to play lower buy-ins to ride out variance given your BR of 100$. I suggest using 1/50 of your BR as max buy-in for STTs and 1/100 for MTTs (this is pretty standard afaik). Personally I stick to these numbers - exept when playing money added MTTs (like CCs) where I sometimes take a shot. It is possible for any halfway decent player to run at least even, maybe make a small profit imo - if he stays in BRM limits. I'm just a recreational player myself, with limited knowledge and time - yet I made profit on every site I played at. To the OMG-rigged fraction I won't add anything since it was all said ITT.
