Online gambling shouldn’t fund the mafia

Casino Gambling Web wrote a great article recently about how the Gambino family’s enterprise was partially financed through an illegal, offshore Internet gambling operation. The article argues that this is another example why Internet gambling should be regulated in the U.S.

Online Gambling Helped Fund Gambino Crime Family Enterprise

We agree that it is time we fix the system and for Congress to regulate Internet gambling.

I thought the politicians had already totally screwed the US poker community, you're suggesting tightening it up even further?

Has very little to do with Poker Sites. It's more or less the offshore monies associated with sportsbook and casino vis-a-vis money laundering. And yes UNGIA is really screwy. US players should join and support PPA (Poker Players Allience). PAC for keeping internet poker legal.

This post and the reference to the Gambino's is more about gambling, and has little to nothing to do with poker online. There have been toll free phone numbers for bookies for years and years, and the Gambino's were likely involved. Somehow, phone is being associated with online, and misses the point we are all interested in.

Granted, in a very few years phone will be irrevocably linked to online, but not at this moment.

As for crime bosses paying taxes, I'd vote yes!

For anyone interested here's more detailed article regarding the case:

Mob Linked to Online Gambling Sites

As DJ states, it's more related to bet-making/gambling than poker (a distinction I'm afraid most US Lawmakers are incapable of recognizing).

Any business that is bringing in a steady srtong revenue stream will attract the criminal elements. I haven't fully read the article so I may not be totally relevant to the discussion. Laws are already in place to combat criminal enterprises (ie. RICO or CCE) more legislation will only serve to complicate matters, and make it tougher for legitimate businesses and players. Just my 2 cents...

As a matter of fact, they do. Just one example is in Illinois where the mobs have long been involved in city towing and salvage yards, trash pickup and disposal and numerous highway construction/contractor companies. And that's not ALL they do either ;-))

Uh oh, new legislation ahead? No more new or repaired highways and the trash will just have to stay in your backyard.

Our government is a JOKE. They pick on one organized crime family name for media consumption and distribution. Why don't they tell us how many 'mobs' there really are.

MMMmmm. Maybe NOT a good idea for them. They would have to put the Congressional Crime Family at the top of the list.

At least with gambling, we have a choice about inserting money into the cash stream. Money collected by the government is called taxes (their form of No Limit Holdem). ..

For it to be a bad beat they'd have to know what they're doing and go in with the best hand
