NEWS: Nevada Senate committee approves Internet poker bill

"The bill authorizes the Nevada Gaming Commission to adopt regulations and to grant licenses to casinos to be ready to offer online poker if Congress passes an Internet gambling bill or if the U.S. Department of Justice says online gaming is allowed under federal law."

The DOJ does not create laws and does not interpreter laws so the DOJ has absolutely no authority to allow or disallow online poker.

I wish this were true. In fact, it is the DOJ's interpretation of the current law that is creating the mess that we are in. There is nothing in the UIGEA that states that online poker is illegal internet gambling. The DOJ says it is and doors get kicked in, assets seized etc.

I dont know what the powers at be have been told but the Poker Room Directors here in Reno at the 2 major Casinos I play at both have new divisions dedicated to creating and maintaining new types of integrated live games and online games. So its seems they have it mapped out & under control.

The legislative branch, the Congress, makes the laws.
The judicial branch, the judges, lawyers and/or some specialists, the Supreme Court interprets the law.
The executive branch. where the DOJ belongs, enforces the law.

Now the DOJ got the wrong interpretation of the law(s). One of the ways to fix it is to go to court(s) (not plea guilty) and get the right interpretation of the law(s). The Supreme Court has the final say not any department of the executive branch like the DOJ.

Thanks for the basic civics lesson. What you fail to understand is that in the real world, govt agencies have broad latitude in how a law is interpreted and applied, particularly when the law is as poorly written as UIGEA.

And yes, I'm aware of the remedies we have. Unfortunately, the courts and congress move a lot slower than the DOJ.

Anyways, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, I just wish Congress would hurry up and get this done.

Hate to say it, but this has been the plan all along.

Once the Reid bill got shot down, casinos were still planning on getting into the egambling scene regardless.

The fact that the DOJ eliminated their competition was just a bonus.

I think you are both correct, in a way. Congress will most likely take into consideration DOJ investigations when deciding whether to legalize online poker.

So while the DOJ doesn't make laws, they certainly influence them. Lucky for us, there are other influences as well.

The more I read about the DOJ, the scarier it is.

Was glad to see the Supreme Court today clipped it's wings regarding the Arizona illegal immigration law.

Now someone has to stop it's threatened prosecution of those using legal medical marijuana.

The Department Of Justice = Gustapo !!!....and its coming America! This online poker roundup is just the beginning,or the beginning of the end,if the other branches of government doesnt do something to trim them down to size.
Right now,its only affecting online poker,but watch out for tomorrow!
