New to Omaha I just started playing Omaha (nickle and dime cash) on Poker Stars and the following happen: Had an Ace of hearts with four hearts on the board I also have trip K's so the computer gives the win to this other player who had two low hearts in his hand and says that I have trip K's instead of the Ace high flush??? Is this some kind of Omaha rule I'm not aware?

omaha starting hands Omaha is going to produce greater hands than holdem. It is very important to enter hands with solid starting position. Remember u need 2 use 2 cards from your hand. So, while in holdem As 10d might be an acceptable starting pt, rarely in omaha will it stand. My favorite starting hand in omaha H/L is As Ad Ks 2d.

Omaha you have to use 2 of the cards from your hand to make the best 5 card hand. ( you can't use only 1 no matter how better that would make your hand A good Omaha HI hand is a hand that consists of 4 cards that go together J10Q9 or 4567 something Like that pocket pair are good to because it's fun to be hiding trip's don't try to bluff alot Because it will really burn you almost any hand you can think of you can almost bet someone has. As for Omaha HI LO just in cause you might as well be intrested in this Goes like this HI= The best possible HI hand in poker ( the normal high hand straight , flush ect.) Lo: Cards A 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 <-- Those are your Lo cards you must play 2 from your hand and three on the board and the LOWEST low wins (A,2 ,3 ,4 5, A 3.4 5. 6.) Whatever just don't be lied to as I was and told the Highest low wins . If you win the Lo you split the pot with the person who has high if you can manage to have the HI and the LO *it's ususlly the straight a-5 that does that* Then you scoop the pot hope this hepls. This is a very good game to get into. (( Lots of loose fishies))

Player B: 7432A Player C: 7542A ...and check the numbers from left to right. Both players have a 7, so move to the next card. Here, Player B has a 4 and Player C has a 5. As the 4 is lower than the 5, Player B has the best low hand and takes the low pot. A game I played (unsuccessfully) recently went like this. *** RIVER *** [3d 5h Qd 5d] 4♣ toolman111: shows [4d 2h Qh 6h] (HI: a straight, Deuce to Six; LO: 6,5,4,3,2) Buddyface: shows [8c Kh Ah Qs] (HI: two pair, Queens and Fives; LO: 8,5,4,3,A) toolman111 collected 1525 from pot toolman111 collected 1525 from pot *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 3050 | Rake 0 Board [3d 5h Qd 5d 4c] Seat 1: Buddyface showed [8c Kh Ah Qs] and lost with HI: two pair, Queens and Fives; LO: 8,5,4,3,A Seat 4: toolman111 (small blind) showed [4d 2h Qh 6h] and won (3050) with HI: a straight, Deuce to Six; LO: 6,5,4,3,2 Now here I would think I would take the low hand as I thought only wheels counted as straights? But as the other player has a six which is lower then my eight I loose the low hand as well? Regardless if that hand is also a straight? Finally in this scenario if I had a wheel would a 6 - 2 win high hand with the low hand going to the wheel because the count is 5 – A? That’s a lot of questions and I probably shouldn’t have been in the pot anyway, but that’s how things go … |

re: New to Omaha poker Buddy, you worked out your answers correctly within your post. You don't have to have a straight to be eligible for the low; that is why you didn't pick up the low in the HH you posted. In your second scenario, you would win the high pot with a 2-6 straight. Additionally, you would qualify for the best low with the wheel. More than likely, you would split the low in that hand but take the high. If you play enough, you may here people say they got quartered. That means you didn't win the high pot (50%) and had to split the low pot two ways.

Ok, but I'm unsure how to interpret this bit from the same site Low hands are specifically ranked by taking the highest card in the low first and working backwards, with the player who shows the first lower card than his opponent(s) taking the low. Now in the case of the hand I was playing the hands broke down as follows: LO: 8,5,4,3,A (Me) LO: 6,5,4,3,2 (Other player) So if the count comes from the left to the right my eight loses to his six? and the ace does not come into play in this low hand? Basically I lost this low hand with the eight vrs the other players six?

Buddy, this isn't meant has an insult by any means, but you should really read up on the rules and strategies of play in Omaha BEFORE you start playing for money. As you can see, you cost yourself money by not knowing some basic rules about Omaha which can be a confusing game enough when you know the rules. It would be benifitial to you to understand the basics of the game before committing money to it.

Yeah, but for a nickle and dime I don't worry too much. Of course factoring in the exchange rate and things do change. Not much written about Omaha H/L relative to NL holdem which has no end of sites, and I'm generally lazy when it comes to reading. Thrusday Night Poker had a good chapter, but I only started reading it this week. I guess I prefer trial by fire and the smell of fish about me for the first little while but as GI Joe says "Now I know and knowing is half the battle" ... Thanks to everyone for the education.
