My first Live experience

Hey guys i just thought it would be neat and tell you guys about my first live experience (i have only been playing online for a year) at Lac Leamy casino in gatineau Quebec I bought 100$ into a 1$/2$ table and the first thing i noticed was the level of play was a lot weaker then i expected and most of the people at my table seemed to be old rich guys that were just there to gamble, with a couple younger guys with HUGE stacks in front of them (200$ limit) so i knew that they got paid off by those old fish :P I was playing really tight and only played like 2 hands in the first 30-40mins (was getting pretty bad hands) i got paid about 20$ on 77 (guy hads 5s). Then i got JJ and raised to 6$ and got re raised to 18$ by one of the better players so i called. Flop comes 10 4 3 rainbow and he bets 35$ so i moved all in, he had Aces . Im just gonna continue to grind the micros for now on pokerstars and hopefully the next time i go back i wont be so unlucky.

yeah i hate being beat by higher pocket pairs it just kills.

My first experience was also not good, but not as bad u faced..

i played live before online, as i remember it i had absolutely no idea what was happening, and i lost 100 in like 20 minutes playing limit holdem.... oh and i was hammered drunk too. that 100 stood no chance.. but i managed to drag in one small pot and that was enough to get me involved in poker..

Poker pokerstars has the highest standard of play across all sites for all stakes across all poker mediums in my opinion and thats from someone with experience. at the micros play is still likely to be bad but you would be better of on the I poker network or Full tilt. What makes pokerstars Great is its software which makes multi tabling so much easier and more doable then any other site and player volume means games available much faster. Unless your playing more then 5 tables at a time I would not recommend pokerstars.

lol thanks for the advice but im not a bad player. I have read the theory of poker and holdem for advance players, and i am waiting for harrintings 2 books on cash games in the mail. I just bought a second monitor and i currently multi table 8 tables of pokerstars and i can beat the micros.

Sounds pretty standard. Think of the blinds in cents rather than dollars and you'll usually match the standard of a live game to an online one - $200NL live doesn't play much different to $2NL online.

THis ^ is true (pretty much)... aside from a few you should be able to pick off as being regulars who play decently.

Lukesilver... curious.... your comment on OP's thread here, what relevance does it have to his post? (I also disagree with your statement about the level of play in the micros on Stars being much better than other sites..... my experience has been to the contrary, esp. in SNG/MTT play... $5 level SNG on Stars is worse than the 25cent satellite sng's on Fulltilt, by a longshot)

Never a right way to play jacks is there? Sounds like you were pretty card dead though... maybe next time will better.

The biggest hands I have lost have been pocket pair over pocket pair. Ugh. Of course, the biggest hands I have won have been pocket pair over pocket pair.

One thing to keep in mind, while KK is the second best hand you can have preflop, it's still just a pair of kings. Same holds true for JJ.

You can't be afraid to fold what you think is a big hand if you think you could be beat. In live games it's easy enough to wait for the nuts, and take money from the weaker players, while seldom getting involved in big pots with the bigger, tougher stacks.

And remember, a flop that JJ covers is also a good flop for QQ, KK, and AA.

It was at the Excalibur in Vegas for my 21st birthday . . . (about a week after, actually, so we could make a gun show in town) - it was a 1-2 limit game, except you could bet 2-6 at any time. I forget what the exact term for it is.

It was basically a bunch of tourists playing cards. I played some limit after that, and then started playing NL at my friend's home game. I still occaisonally play limit. But only at the Fitz and only when I'm drinking. I just like getting the pissed off look from old guy at the table because I check/raised him on the flop and bet him off his hand on the turn with air. "You folded $4 into $20 because you thought I beat you?" *Exposes seven high*.

For all of you that are actually old enough to enter a casino :-(, does it seem like the regs or at least more experienced players, are younger, and the fish are older?

My first real life game was at a private tourney and there was 85 of us playing and I finished in 5th place.

cant wait for the Casino getting built near me to get finished..definately will be going often as i have yet to play live poker in a Casino.

will def need to check out that thread on here about Casino etiquette and tipping the dealer and stuff so i dont look like an idiot

I wasn't to sure when to tip but i seen people mostly tip when they won a pot or as they were leaving the table. I only won 1 pot and I tipped the dealer 1$. I was planning on tipping when i left the table as well but i didn't have any chips left :P

To the guy who asked if the older people were the fish: at the table i was sitting at, the older people were most definitely the fish(its definitely not always like that though). One of the guys kept on re-buying in and must of lost like 1k since i got there, to bad i wasn't getting any cards.

Yeah its just that i hear more from people that younger guys are regs and the old tourists are just fish... makes me wanna age, get a hawaiian shirt, and move to vegas.

The buy-in was $80 and included dinner it was also a soccer team's fund raiser so there was some wierd stuff going on like rebuys within the first 45 min. as long as you had under 1k chips with 3k starting chips.

I'm sure glad you qualified that statement, because in my experience the older participants are more likely than not to be seasoned players who know what they are doing. Matter of fact, I've befriended a couple of retired guys who play everyday (and make a very nice living thank you). They treat me like their protige daughter and we've had some great strategy discussions.

There's one old rounder who used to crush tournaments when he was younger but now just plays cash games because he can make more money that way. When I first started playing live tourneys he appointed himself to be my coach and was that ever a blessing. I learned so much from his critiques of my play, as well as his observations about my opponents.

I must say my first time was a blast! Didn't win any money though i broke even.I also feel live games are alot weaker compared to online...but that just my opnion.Anyway better luck next time guy

i hope you enjoyed your first live experience, did you have a lot of success online before you played live, and when i play live for the first time i wanna play in a big casino with a lot of drink and a lot of chips at the end

Stay confident my freind poker is not an easy road but if you make the decision to wanna be a good player im sure it will pay off. On your play tough call definitely has to do with past history and read in that spot but dont let it put you down just come back more confident and a better player.

My live experience, derived from San Diego Limit cash games, is similar to LarkMarlow's...the seniors (who play during the day) took me under their wings, provided feedback, discussed strategies, & provided a lot of valuable insight...to them I am forever grateful. The SO had initially suggested I not play with/against these ol' timers because they would show no mercy...that didn't happen (I'm thinking it's 'cuz I'm more female than the SO ).

yarightguy, it reads as though you're prepping for a return trip eventually...y'all just got unlucky with the J.J vs A.A but it was fun @ least?

Nope - if anythning I'd say the majority of experienced casino regs are older here and I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case in a lot of other places too. Younger players are more likely to be online IMO whereas in a casino you'll still find the grizzled old guys who've been playing there for years, before all the boom.

UPDATE: i went back and this time i made about 150$ profit before i had to leave, in almost 2hours, got most of my money on pocket Jacks (revenge) when i hit a set and some asian guy paid me off on a gut shot straight draw lolz.

Gotta love those gutshot straight draws that people chase... lol.

Good to know... have to be a little carefuller i guess if i cant make that generalization but I guess it makes sense.
