Luck to Skill ratio in freerolls?

ok. as the title suggest.

Obviously freerolls are different because people are not losing there own money !

What do think?

I think around 30% skill and 70% luck.

Does it make you a bad player if you cant cash in them often or is that just because theres so many callers with drawing hands?

I think they just take a different set of skills. And of course it depends on the freeroll. Some of the freerolls I have played have had much better play than buy in games.

Im talking about the no-limit $100 ones on fulltilt.

2700 people, top 27 get paid. 1 in a 100 lol.

I think it depends on the freeroll. CC freerolls have a much higher quality of players IMO...you can actually 'play poker' during those tournaments!
In the regular tournaments, about the first hour seems to be devoted to weeding out the donks! Sometimes it is not worth doing anything but folding because someone is constantly all-in!
Poker requires a lot of skill & much patience to last for the long haul in those cases. It is IMO, about utilizing the skills you have to use the cards you're dealt to the best of your ability! Sometimes you are not going to be able to do anything about being beat! And sometimes you have a great streak of luck to go with your skills.
It is dependant upon the cards both you & your opponents are dealt at the time, the skills you all possess & luck that you will outplay & outwit the same opponents! It depends also on the human feelings that we all possess that may put us(or our opponents) 'on tilt' too!
As for me, I'm trying out new tactics most of the time, so I am not so predictable. I have a rather long list of things to do and not to do! I am still developing my style of play!
If you look at every good player, you can see losses...but more often than not, they will prevail. So just because you lose, it does not mean you are a bad player. Just strive to be better next time & learn from your mistakes! That will make you into a good & winning player!

Half a cup of luck and two heaping tablespoons of skill, stir well. If only 1/100 cash, how often do you expect to...although I'd guess only a few hundred are taking it seriously, so maybe 1/20 cashes is reasonable?

i think the luck that's involved is mostly the cards you get and then the community cards. there's nothing you can do if your a tight player and you don't get any cards to go along with your style of play, that is other then bluffing or aggression.
freerolls are harder for me now that i've been playing real money games. i don't seem to have the patience in those 2700 on FT.
i always figured those playing want to build a stack fast or get out, that's why you see a lot of maniac behavior, hehehehe.
when i really watch and take care of how i play i can usually itm.

Many play not seriously because spent nothing also the majority of cases trust good luck... I would give for luck 65%

I think your on the right track but if your good you can cash in them. I go back and play them here and there and see the things that your implying.I look at who and how many players will call a 7x raise.lol.I think its a little better at the micro's but only a little.

I find that, like someone else said, the first hour is a donk-a-thon. People all-in calling over and over till they're broke or up 10k.
Funny how those donks are never in the top 10.

If you can spend an hour folding you'll probably place in the top 500, and frankly that's skill alone. With luck you'll be ITM.

i think its more luck because usually i go deep but never actually "CASH" but do go very deep and get well over 200k but still a bad beat that i cant in anyway fold ALWAYS gets me :'( i have to much bad luck at the moment..but any way in the $100 2700 player ftp one i think u need more luck then in the CC 1(didnt play yet but think ther is) much more skill then luck

It can`t be any more luck than any other time. As one of the posters have said, it takes a different kind of skill.

IMO, playing freerolls (I don`t like them, a lot of time and effort for little reward, again, IMO) you need to DEFINATLY be TAG, but possibly loosen up slightly (If that makse sense)

You also have to be ready to be donked out. Your AA in a pot with 6 others is not gonna win as often as it does heads up - does not mean u don`t get all your chips in preflop.

U might lose more times but u will win big when u hit.

I think that assessment is right on the mark for the 2700 player FT Free Rolls. In my experience, the OFC FR gigs offer a better opportunity to cash even when the field is much larger--maybe 1/10? With those I've found that if you can hang in there for the first 2 hours you have a good shot at picking up some change.

Freerolls bring out the worst in all players, good or bad. You do things in freerolls that you would never do in a real money tournament. It is a freeroll and should be played like one. If you are trying to play good hands and odds you will lose most of the time. Be aggressive and loose and let if fly when u think u have the best hand. People say they have some sort of strategy about freerolls, there are none, just play like it doesn't mean anything and gamble.

When I discovered free-rolls I brought a style of play that never seemed effective until I modified it. Once modified it was hard to return it to how it was once before and now I its tainted with bad habits.

With so many freaks going all in right up to the end, freerolls require a different skill. The patience to avoid hands that you might play otherwise. Oh yes, it really ticks me off when some bonehead catches the straight playing 64 off suit when you are betting hard with 3 Kings.

People will play any hand in freerolls and go all in with just about any hand in freerolls. Catching a hand when you are playing crap is lucky, avoiding a hand with good cards is skill.

Kinda like playing craps or roulette or even (gasp) slots at the poker table??!! I hear ya...interesting perspective.

Every situation is different, sometimes you have real bad players, sometimes players who can play a little...

Freerolls is sure more luck than luck, but you can''t be to general...

In my opinion it depends on the player/payout ratio. The better chances players can hit the money the more serious they'll play it. In a 4k plus free roll where only 180 are payed or 10 seats are given its gonna be a donkfest for a while. Regardless of how many players there are playing the closer the payouts come the more serious the play. When someone has been playing for 2 or 3 hours and is about 30 people from the money he/she is not gonna risk a random all in with K6 off suit, given theyre not eaten up by blinds. I miss the easy money free rolls on Pitbull and Hollywood Poker.. those were the days...

I won't play freerolls because the method to success is anti everything I play poker for.

Basically its join minimum 10 at a time, every hour and shove and hope. There is an excellent chance after the 1st hour is up you are maybe left in 1 with a very large stack and by reverting to solid poker have chance of going deep. Do this a few times and after a couple of hours you hopefully are well placed to go deep in 2 or 3. You cannot play TAG poker in freerolls.

There are hundreds starting over loads of sites, so there are no shortage to join.

This obviously only applies to poker sites own freerolls and not those organised by this forum, which are a total different kettle of fish.

I have no interest in playing like this but can understand why people do it. Detest the thieves and password sharers though.

I have found some very good play late in freerolls, but the early hours of the games can be ridiculous!

Wow that type of free roll is really a long shot for me... If people think the way I think they won't really take those type of free rolls serious... with first place only being like 10 or 15$... It's not worth it.. But besides that these free rolls have a lot of people who are just learning the game and won't fold... Unless you're catching cards all night it's really difficult to make the money out of 2700 people and not bluff at all......

once it gets late it gets tough i had a huge lead and a was first overall in the 250 us for the first two hours and then got sucked out on two straight and was busted. a lot of donks that play hands they shouldn't so its good and bad

first 30 minutes 90% luck 10% skills, when donks are gone maybe 50/50

I'd say 1st hour to 2 is nasty. I've just seen a duck go all in with 10k chips on a 23 suited post flop - with nothing but a pair of 3's.

i almost agree with this, when the donks get a huge chip stack dont worry, they'll blow it all soon playin the same way, and if u got any skillz at all u will still be in it after the first break, then it becomes a diff game i nthe "larger field" freerolls i myself use to play the $50 freerolls at UB/AP i've made top 18 i'd say 70 times outta 1000 times i know it's not a good percentage but hey when u got skillz u go farther than with luck trust me

Luck can help you today or tomorrow but it can't help all the time. Over time skill plays a greater part of the equation.
