ANY card in your hand that is not dominated by an opponent is "live", eg, if you have 7-2, and you're up against A-K, you have 2 live cards, because either a 7 or a 2 on the flop wins you the pot.

With the same 7-2, against A-7, you have only 1 live card, since a 7 will give the pot to villain by virtue of the A kicker.
