I like to limp with AK when I have a very aggressive player at my table, because if I hit chances are he/she might try to bluff at the flop when an A or K hits the board. Then I go over the top to try to either get them commited or take the pot right there. And besides the situation you were in is a great example of the benefits limping with AK, because the other guy didn't raise you couldn't put him on a better 2 pair,

re: Limping with AK poker The question is who says you have to raise with AK? You can play any 2 cards anyway you want. My thought would be he was limping to trap waiting for someone to raise so he could go top. This is a good tactic late in tournaments and one many players use. I think you are sore cause you busted out. He had the better hand pre-flop and post-river so I am not sure what the problem is.

I lose with AK all the time. I bubbled a live tournament against a big stack who was raising every hand. So i moved all in with Ak and got called with ace-ten. Ten came on the river, and i was out. They ended up chopping for about 500 a piece.

Slow play is aimed more after the flop not to much before the flop, like I previously said if you limp with monster starting hands in early position you are likely giving other players the chance to play the rags you would normally get out with a pre flop raise. Even if you limp in later position the limpers ahead of you also have the chance to bust you. I don't know about you but I dont want some donk busting me because he limped with ace rag or king rag. Rather have some schmoe call my pre flop raise with a pocket pair and hit a set then to have those rags hit trips and/or even 2 pair. The more people you allow in a hand the more likely your monster starting hand will be worthless.

re: Limping with AK poker I have started to fold AK more frequently when I get re-raised after betting 4xBB, and also when I see large bets before me in early position, I fold too. I play too scared to play them slow; having maybe one pair is not what I like, but maybe that should change. If I decide to play it in late position with just calls in front of me, I sometimes overbet (is that bad?) In early position I Bet 4xBB; AK is such a mind boggling hand, and it being suited makes it pretty (though odds don't increase much).

To rafeeki I totally agree with you went over that in my head over and over he woulda called no matter what bet I made but still I would have folded if he didnt limp in. Funny you really do remember what hands you lost but never the hands you have won.

Limping with AK is a great play to get others in the pot with a lesser hand, or a short stack push with Ax. When I have a big lead in chips, I try a get more callers on my big hands. If you raise with AK everytime, you don't make any money. X

There're guys who don't trust too much on AK. I never rise with AK when i see tight players going in. Of course they are high ranked cards, but just that. Anyway, you have bad luck. Bye. |

Maybe he was hoping for a raise so he could throw in a 3 bet. You didnt give any information about the blinds\antes/ other players stacks/ his exact position. I personally would never limp with A-K unless someone at the table was raising a lot, just so i could slam a 3 bet on him and put him in check. I will slow play AA like this as well but sometimes i wont 3 bet after his raise because i dont want to scare the fish away. I let them trap thereselves. I never slowplay KK.

i think hands like that u should deal them very carefully...The problem with ace king is that its a very good pre flop hand and u are hoping that u are gonna get paid...My approach is that some times u shoould raise pre flop not much so the people on the table dont put you very high ...And if u dont hit at the flop or u get small cards u fold immediately,Learn to fold good pre flop hands if u dont make sth good at the flop..Bad luck man its a part of poker we just have to get passed it...

what YOU MIGHT AS WELL LIMP WITH A,K. Raising only gets called by live cards, that hits consistantly so you are ultimately losing more money. I would raise on occassion in good position, but normally try to keep cheap to minimize the losses. DONT get me wrong a pot size bet pre-flop could be a good idea but play it safe.

Why? If I have had them a couple of times and raised them during a tourney, why shouldn't I mix it up a bit to throw players off the scent a bit? Also, like Bluffyou123 and a few others said, AK can cripple you or see you off if they don't hit. Again comes down to what table is like, and how you and others have been playing. Personally AK is just high card and I play it cautiously, but I don't see why there should be a set way to play them! |

Nice bluffing by him. I do also limp with AK. I just wait for the Flop to make sure that I got a pair with a high kicker. If someone will going to raise, of course I'm just going to call. It's a chance for a trap not getting it ALL IN. and when the Turn comes, you go ALL IN and I just Call. So guess what, you got into a trap. I got 2 Pairs with that AK. Don't be too aggressive dude. sometimes their hand are more better than your As.

I don't think you should do it every hand, now with that being said i do limp with AK or AA sometimes because it will catch people of guard if you hit the nuts... Like I said its just another trick for your bag but something not to do all the time...

it's not the kind of hand you want 4 others coming to the flop. that's a quick way to go broke it's also one of the top 5 hands in hold'em, and has tons of preflop fold equity and stuff. theres been like a million threads on it where people actually explain it good |
