Limit poker..

Is this just an excuse for donks to have fun ?

In a tourney with 4000 entrants. Its down to the last 300 people and I am already in the money. I get AA on the button.. CHRISTMAS

Blinds are 4/8k

Player under the gun raises to 16k.. BONUS

I raise him to 24 and he calls.

The flop comes over 5 5 6

He bets. I flat call.

Turn comes over 8

He bets I flat call.

River comes over a 6

He bets. I flat call.

Comes to the showdown and the clown only raised pre flop with 5 6 off suit and hit the full house on the flop...

I can understand if he was BB and someone raised and he called. But raising from UTG with 5 6 o/s....

Two hands later I have AK. I raise and it folds round to the SB. He raises me again. I call. ( BB has folded ).

The flop comes 4 K 4

I bet. He raises. ( strange thinks I )

So I call

Turn comes over an A

So he raises, I reraise. he calls

River comes over a 2

He raises. I reraise. He reraises me again. I call

He turns over a bloody full house 4s and 2s...

Where do these people learn the game ?

I think in limit people play that way because they know they can't lose it all (unless they are shortstacked) on any one hand. I'm not really a limit player. I prefer no limit.

I hate limit.

Invariably the best hand pre flop will get stitched up mercilessly..

i only play limit thats because its illegal in minnesota for a card room to have no limit (other than tournaments) i play 2/4 and people call, check raise with the worst hands and end up winning, but what can you do.

Here in Arizona the casinos cannot play No Limit either. But they do have what they call spread limit games. For example, the $2-20 game has blinds of 1 and 2, with 20 being the max bet at any time.

There is A whole lot of players red that don't understand the destinction between no-limit and limit. In limit more than any other game, U can "fish" for catching hands that your opponent would never put you on, such as the 5-6 os that caught your AA. The reason he raised is that if he did catch the flop, "you" would assume that he was betting A high hand therfore be induced to call and even raise. Your mindset must be "different" in limit play. It is truly the game where you need to expect the un-expected, especially connectors. The problem with big hands in limit, is unless your in the final blind structures, you can't effectively protect your hand , thus, even though it is hard sometimes, you have to believe they caught their cards and lay the "big ones down"

There's a reason it referred to as No Fold'em Hold'em.

I think most people here have a misconception of limit hold 'em. Read "Small Stakes limit hold 'em" if you want to improve you're limit game. Also, limit tourneys are very painful. Ring games can be very good to your bankroll as the same players that raise with 42o and hit a boat will also call you down with bottom pair. Limit is the epitome of "the long run", and the averages will balance out in your favor if you are a above average player.

Don't knock it till you try it. Guess that applies to many things...

I play Limit Hold'em S&G Freerolls at Everest. People are crazy and keep reraising with nothing (and often catch the point..).
After one day of unsuccessfull playing, I decided to change my strategy and started spending some of my stack to call "reraisers". I know it is bad poker, but most of the time I get ITM and feed my bankroll.
Limit can be frustrating for some (my husband, for example, doesn't like it), because you must struggle a lot to eliminate your adversaries. But, if played well, it's good exercise, because it teaches you patience.

Rob5775 and Kbflyer (and even kaiWalk) nailed it. Limit Hold'em ring games means thinking long term. Lots of players play too many hands and go too far with them. But, those mistakes are what make you money in the LONG run.

In the short term, Limit can be frustrating when an old timer calls with with too bad cards and makes two pair on the River to beat the Aces that you raised with. Or, when you raise with pocket K's and the old timer calls with A 7 off-suit and hits his A on the River. Or...yada, yada, yada...lots of bad beats.

But, solid Limit players will suffer more bad beats in low stakes games than loose players, so get used to it. But, if you can deal with the frustration in the short term, the bad players playing too many hands and going too far with them will make you money in the LONG run. Be sure to tell your opponent "nice hand" when they suck out on you...it encourages them to continue playing poorly!

Read Miller, Sklansky, and Mallmuth's book on Small Stakes Hold'em. And, in low stakes Limit games, when 7-9 players are regularly seeing the flop, you often need to treat big pocket pairs as drawing hands.

All good points, but I think limit is a post-flop game as players will play drawing hands. Your AA doesnt look so good with 3,4,5 out on the flop be assured someone played a 26. You have to play limit after the flop and learn to figure out the hands that have you beat. When you get the nuts these players will make it profitable for you. Until you have 5 cards in your hand you have nothing. Your hole cards aren''t even half of your hand, limit makes it easier to see flops and it is hard to eliminate competition especially at low limits.

Some say that Limit has no skill.I dont really agree with them. Even though ho limit is mostly a lottery in limit you can control your stack.
