I haven't played any poker since November of 2013. I guess you could say life got in the way. I still enjoy poker.

I'm a live tournament player at local casinos with a tiny bit of online cash micro-stakes play tossed in.

IMO, I suck. I've been playing poker for about 3 years (Not including the year off) I have played in about 20-25 live tournaments and only cashed once.

I'd like to start playing again, but I feel like it may just be a waste of time and money. I know I need to open up my range and stop being such a tight player. However, I think my main issue is I just suck at the math portion of the game so far.

Best way to get the juices flowing is to study, and study hard. Play small, mid field tourneys to get rolling again. Start with playing absolute basic tight ABC positional poker and as you get more comfortable with that start slowly implementing a new element into your game.

I know where you're coming from too. I was a profitable player for a while then life got in the way. I went back to the straight basics and went from there. Now I'm seeing results.

Poker is not like riding a bike (well, for most people). Dynamics change, plays change and evolve. Hell, last year when I went on hiatus 3x raises were the standard. Now minraising, or 2.5 is the norm. Small change, of course, but a change.

And as far as opening up your range, don't. If you want to get better, save that for down the road as playing that style takes reads and math to pull off to effect. And since you stated you suck at math you'll be at a disadvantage.

I think that it is unhealthy to believe that you "suck at poker". As a poker player, you're mentality is a huge factor. So thinking that you are bad, will keep you tight and not venture into how you maybe able to improve your game. So shake the negativity and get creative! = )

Seems like every time I do, the other(s) in the pot always have me beat.

Yeah BK is right.

Use these low pointers as a guide to when ya should just step aside.

Yes numbers do play a big role, but so does range. The range you put yourself on is where ya head is always going to be. As you were saying, think outside the normal range, but still keep em tight.

If you show the same tendencies as everyone else that plays "The Range" then you have already made it hard for yourself.
