Illegal to Check Raise

I was reading through Daniel Negreanu's book and saw that he talked about that at some home games people don't allow the check raise due to its nature of deception....i just never heard of this before i mean taking that move away makes the game that much more boring....let me know any comments.....

When I was in jail we played poker for soup and they didn't allow check raising. I didn't understand why but I played by there rules and still won lots.

makes no sense to me, then you can bet to a check and not have to fear a raise. Makes bluffing a lot more profitable, because the person probably doesn't have a hand (normally you can slow play and then check-raise, although you could still check the flop planning to bet the turn either way), plus if they call you can still see a free card. Normally if you bet you have to fear them raising you and then not getting the free card you would have gotten had you checked.

Yeah that's a retarded rule, I rarely utilize check raises but when I do it's always very profitable, and it would really suck to have that taken out of my arsenal.

That's probably more stupid than the "your allowed to lie about your hand but not tell the truth rule!"

I've actually heard something like that before. I guess there's some old fashioned players that consider the check-raise rude, because as KingCurtis said, its deceptive nature.

The first home game I ever played in was one where the dealer could pick the game. They were playing games like 5-card draw, 31 (where you pound the table), and junk like that. None really had chances to bluff or check-raise. But I found a chance to check-raise and did once. Boy, they all let me have it! "No check-raising!!" "What do you think this is? The WSOP?" They invited me back a few times, but I turned 'em down because their games were the type and style that little old men at the retirement home play.

It's a rule in some less blood-thirsty home games (I've heard). When you're not trying to make money off the players. Even a marshmallow like me doesn't really see the point of a no CR rule. If getting CR'ed doesn't offend my delicate sensibilities.........hmm, I can't even imagine WHO might be offended by it. Maybe I'm living a life too sheltered

it's been apart of home games I've played all my life , it's just friendly poker , familys getting together to play poker without the cutthroat tactics. lots of family pots ,everyone chasing , playing for the change in our pockets. just fun poker .

that was a different time and a lot different game , they would never try to change it now. I use it way to much for my own good though.

Well, my home games if i know im going to felt <insert family member> and I knowwww they have no chance at all, ill just check/call them if they arnt too aggressive... then they lose less, or ill do a big overbet in an attempt to scare them off the pot.

i think the no check raising rule has to be one of the dumbest rules ever.

it is a major part of the game and to not use it kills all of the fun people have in the game


the deceptiveness of the move is what makes it fun.

Someone tried to get me to play "no raises preflop" once. I told them to get the **** out.

I was playing in a home game once, for money, which several times they tried to say no side pots, because it was too difficult to figure out. I was never involved in one so I never got the chance to say a little more than what you said above, but needless to say I never came back.

When I play in a home game I treat it the same as if I was playing in a casino. The whole point is to win money. I have no intention of taking it easy on anyone, relative or whatever (I've been known to felt my own fiance). Check raising is looked down on in some home game scenes because it's "impolite." Yeah, poker's not a polite game. If a check raise rule in in effect, I won't be playing.

Check raising is a major part of limit poker. So I guess that was one game that wasn't played.

If I'm playing at a "home" game, it's because everyone understands that this is serious poker, just not being played at a casino. I like home games because the atmosphere is a little more laid back and relaxed, but I play the same way, and expect others to play the same way as well.

Now, say for example, I'm involved in a pot with my cousin at a ring game, and it ends up just the two of us post flop, I will just check it out with him since I'm not there to take his money, but everyone else's.

I've heard of this one being used as a measure against slowplaying, allegedly there's even been some casinos and card rooms that have implemented the rule. Slow playing doesn't break any actual rules in the first place though, so it seems kinda silly.

Silliest home game rule I've ever come across: when the game gets to heads up, both players pay the maximum blind and the flop is dealt before anyone acts.

negreanu says something about this also its called soft playing....supposedly its cheating.....i dont treat anyone any different, if its my mother or my brother it doesnt matter....im there to win!

he also gives an example about why it is cheating he says if there is 6 people left in a tourney and 5 people get paid...and your taking it easy on yuor good friend your cheating the other people because they could make the money if you knock out your buddy or he knocks out you.

That's an excellent point, one that I think most people who "soft play" never think about. They also don't consider how they are cheating themselves. Taking it easy on another player can cost you serious chips in terms of accumulation, and that can get you knocked out at 4th or 3rd when possibly you could have put yourself in a good enough chip position to win the whole thing.

Check-raising is very important in Limit Holdem to isolate people and put more money in the pot, to name a few. Dissalowing it increases the luck factor of the game.

In NL Holdem, although not used as often, it too is an important tool. Ironically, the threat of a check-raise makes it LESS likely for people to bluff. So if someone is concerned about check-raising being "deceitful" and "unpolite", how about considering that in NL the threat of check-raise actually decreases bluffs.

Also, why is one form of deception worse than another? Why not disallow bluffs? How about slow plays(like check-calling)? Isn't check-calling impolite as well?

Singling out one betting option is quite arbitrary and decreases the quality of the game. I guess some people prefer to play things to showdown to see who got lucky. Preflop all-in NL holdem would accomplish that much more efficiently.

This reminds me of a great quote by Daniel Negraunu at the 2006 WSOP- "That may be the way y'all play, but it's not poker."

Same thing happened to me. I wasn't able to convince them that was an utterly retarded rule, but I played once anyway and walked away with $140.

Soft playing is cheating (though it can be difficult to prove), but I'm not sure I see the connection between soft playing and check raising - surely check raising would be the opposite of soft playing?

I think everything important on the topic has already been said in this post . . . this all just reminded me why I haven't been able to talk myself into going to a home game in a long time. If I'm gonna drive somewhere to play it might as well be the casino, and otherwise I can find a good game online whenever I feel like it, so what's the point of slow, weird, badly run, etc. home games?

Sounds silly to me. I would'nt play in the game.

I took flack for this in a 'friendly' game once as well. My argument was simple; "You sat down with $$ the same as I did, mine is here for your taking... don't think I'm not coming for yours". - probably not verbatim but close. People that feel because we're friends I shouldn't take it so serious shouldn't be sitting at a poker table... PERIOD!

though i think that illegal check raising is a stupid rule, I rarely check raise anyways.

In my experience? Beer and laughs. And also pies. Pies are important.

But I agree, they're almost never the proper venue for winning loads of money.
