I wear my sunglasses...at night. So I can...

I am big about sunglasses at the casino, and even at my house games.

It is not because I feel I give away great tells, but because I know there are less odds that I will.

I also like wearing a hat, or hoodie. Often I'm called the unibomber, and I love being able to see everything of my opponent, and love to know he sees less of me.

I also feel it does wonders if playing tight, scaring off people on bets.

How do you feel about sunglasses?

Plus lighting after a certain amount of time causes my eyes to strain.
I never turn on the room light.
I love the dark.

If you're playing in the dark, wearing sunglasses, how do you see your cards?

I had a pair of shades but they did me no good at all.

It hid the tells - wonderful.

But being mirror shades they gave more important info away..

I have yet to play live but i always wear a ball cap i feel naked without it. I always wear sunglasses outside unless it's raining. So i would feel natural to wear these in live poker. I believe i would grow a zztop beard so no one could see if the vein in my neck pops up

I haven't played too many live games recently but I usually go without. I always say to my friends that next time I'm wearing sunglasses but can't seem to get comfortable in them! Plus sometimes I feel kinda stupid when playing with friends and I'm the only one with sunglasses

Not to go too far off topic, but this thread actually reminded me of something that Daniel Negreanu once said - basically, he tries to figure out why people at his table wear sunglasses, hats, or other accessories to cover up parts of their face/body (is this person wearing sunglasses because he's nervous? afraid of giving off tells? have something to hide? trying to intimidate others? etc).

If I recall correctly, he then uses this information to try to figure out what type of player this might be (passive, aggressive, tight-aggressive, etc). It's amazing how much detail Negreanu pays attention to, but we've all got to start doing things like this if we hope to improve our game.

The two best reasons to wear sunglasses at the table aren't what most people would think.

You don't wear shades to keep from giving off tells. You wear them so your opponents won't know you're looking at them. Even the worst players will turn to wood when the know they are being observed.

Also, people will think you're an idiot. They'll think you're a jack-ass whose seen way too much poker TV. The last thing you want your opponents to think is that you are smart, savvy, and really know what's going on at the table.

OP - that would be really annoying and id personally give you action just to catch a good flop with crap cards and get ur money/laugh. I guess ur not playing more than 1/2, and home games? home games with the glasses and hoodie ahhhh thats so bad.... sigh...

this kind of stuff I think could be used for 10/20+ nl cash games, or big 10k tourneys or something like that. I would probably try shades for this, see if I like it or not... it would help at high stakes for sure, the crazy good plyrs can pick up on little tells. It would certainly make sense to wear them at this level, if you like to.

But i dont see the point rly for low limit 1/2 and $500 and under low BI tourneys, its not like ppl stare you down at these lvls and I dont find it intimidating anyway if they do. It makes overall such little difference, but I guess if you want to squeeze every edge you can get... but I wouldnt.

I don't wear sunglasses at the table but i think if I went to a casino or higher stakes games then I usually play I would try it. I think I hide my emotion pretty well at the table but it helps even if you're only giving yourself a mental edge.

The popular reason for wearing them nowadays is to hide tells. But what tells?

Some look for eye twitching. This is a tell. But of what? Precisely. Eye twitching could mean a bluff or a monster.

The real tell is in the direction of the eye movement. If, when asked a question, (weather they answer it or not) the eyes move down and to the left (right handed folks) they are most definitely lying about whatever it is they are doing on the table. Up and to the right. FOLD

Now, the reason for the beginning of the sunglasses trend.

If you put a common substance (I won't tell you what it is) on the cards you wish to mark and view them with sunglasses. Your mark stands out like a giant marshmallow in a bowl of Jello.

This is the reason it started. And why floor men usually have a pair available. And...... it still goes on.

It's the reason they switched to colored plastic on the Blackjack boot. Everybody can see it then.

The Texas Dolly feels they should outlaw sunglasses at all poker tables. I agree.

I dont really care about sunglasses cuz when im gettin a read off somebody its not there eyes its there body language or when they talk. I mean there like the top pros that can look at ur eyes and get reads but i just see them as weak players trying to hide something.

would it be legal to wear a mankini at the casino? I reckon my game would improve if I was allowed.

Oh is that the real reason? I thought it was about your pupils dialating. I'll wear some sunglasses from now on.
No seriously, I don't like it.

Great humor guys. I always have fun reading your comments. I've never played in a live tourney. If I did I wouldn't know who to tell...

gas mask poker

Ever see the video of that guy who wears a gas mask at the table? He's not a bad player, from what I've heard. It would be awesome to see him at the WSOP on tv.

Its great fun wearing sunglasses at the poker table! Why?

- You can turn your head in one direction but look the other way at your opponent so the opponent thinks that you ain't looking at them resulting in them possibly giving a tell.

- It can be quite intimidating aswell. If they bet into you, you can just stare at them with a straight face waiting for a reaction! E.g. If they look away from you and keep giving you second looks it means they are scared potentially showing weakness.

The other side of the argument is the fact that wearing sunglasses hides your tells which in some peoples eyes is cheating. This is why some casinos actually ban the use of sunglasses. Some ban the use of sunglasses so they can see your eyes and identify you if you try to cheat but thats going to extremes.

I've never been a fan of the sunglasses in live games, just a personal preference. The fact that I wear regular glasses and don't have enough $ for prescription sunglasses may have something to do with it. But hell, if Negreanu can do it bare-eyed, so can I.
