I need to stop playing over my BR I just lost most of my bankroll playing a game where I just had a few buy-ins. I guess I have not learnt from going broke once this year due to playing a bit too high. Its tempting to play games where you have a big edge on the majority of players, but not enough bankroll. Now its time to build up again from a smaller bankroll. I don't even feel pissed off about the cards not turning my way, it was my own temporary insanity to play too high. Has anyone had similar problems?

After I lost at the cash table I went to win a multi table SNG and made back half of what I lost, so it wasn't so bad. However, I would be much closer to moving up levels if I hadn't made this blunder. Now back to grinding. |

It`s good that you recognise it as a blunder. Rex is right, BR management is a key part of your game, just as important as your skills at the table. For comparison, I have run bad now for three months, by far the worst downswing of my poker career. A lot of players would be busted by a thing like that. However, in my case, I play so far within my BR that I could continue to lose at the same rate for at least 3 years before I went bust. When you manage your roll that way, the money really ceases to matter. It is just a way of keeping score. and that makes you more or less immune from tilt and from bad beats. Back to the grind, m8.

re: I need to stop playing over my BR poker BR management is what its all about. Without the roll you can't play. I am still trying to figure out my bankroll. In the past I would play 2/5 during the week and lose my winnings on the weekend trying to make a huge day at the 5/10. Eventually I got sick of this constant roller coaster and have just stuck to the 2/5 for now. Its important to take shots at the bigger games if you think you can play, but its more important to be able to recognize when you don't have the BR for it. Try to slow down, build a better roll than move up.

I'm convinced that I would have a much bigger bankroll, and be playing higher stakes if I had used proper bankroll technique from the very beginning. And this is from a player who thought he understood BR when he started. The stabs I've made at higher stakes without the proper roll, have cost me months of grinding. BR Management is as important as knowing how to play poker.
