I'm starting to wonder about Stars

Ok, before you go off on one of those 'Shut the hell up, Internet Poker isn't rigged' rants, just hear me out, please.

I've been playing Poker now for 5 years, always been a solid player - know the theory, read the books, got the experience and won a few decent tourneys and got some decent money finishes - nothing to break the bank managers heart though.

I've been on Pokerstars for around 2 and a half years, and in that time i've enjoyed some good poker. But i've always, always noticed some weird happenings...but, i pushed it aside as it is of course, Poker. These things happen.

Of late however, ive noticed some really weird stuff happening. I mean really weird.

Take this for example.

I was in a $3.25 SNG.

The first two hands were fine, then it went strange.

6 hands in a row, i got dealt the following:

AA
KK
JJ
JJ
JJ
JJ

With three of the Jack hands being the same suit. That's not the end of it though, the first hand. My opponent had...AA

The second hand my opponent (the very same one) had KK.

The last hand, my opponent had QQ...and yes, you guessed it - it was the same guy.

I've just come out of a tournament now, one guy flopped a full house two hands in a row, ok nothing special about that - it happens from time to time.

But he had AA for the two hands...and both flops were 3-3-3.

Coincidence? I somehow think not.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions, i just think that some of the things that happen on Stars (i cant say too much about other sites as i dont play all that many) are abnormal. Sure, you see 'monster' hands in live Poker tourneys, but not to the degree as online - and theres always that element of doubt, because you cant see whats going on behind the scenes.

Oh yeah, just got knocked out of a tourney with KK. The dude called with QTos and flopped 2 pair.

Did i tell you about the hand the other day?

I had KJs...flop came 6-4-J. One guy bet 700, i raised all in for another 2300. He called...with QTos.

Turn Q

River T

Good night.

Jokerstars.

BF

Its all odds.

You just happen to hit a series of events that was probably 1/1,000,000 chance of occuring.

Its poker.

That is incredible

I think posting the hand histories would help here. Not doubting you, it's just though all of that is statistically possible it's soooo unlikely as to raise eyebrows. Three possibilities

1) It's rigged (though why do it in such an obvious way)
2) It' chance
3) You are misremembering it.

You can elimintate the third one with the HHs

People keep posting these specific events like they are somehow more than just a small improbability in the astronomical database of all hands played on PokerStars. Until someone comes in here with a Poker Tracker database with >500,000 hands that actually shows that Stars does not abide by the rules of HE probability, these posts will receive nothing but condolences and occasional prods of generic "just quit"s and "lol whatev"s.

I have gotten Pocket Aces, 7's and 9's before multiple times after another. I just figured the guy on the other end of the computer wasn't shuffling the deck.

No in all seriousness I have gotten the same pocket pair before twice in a row. All I can say is it happens. Heck I've been live and watched the dealer shuffle the cards and still have gotten the same hand twice in a row.

heres one thing to think about. Think how many hands are getting dealt each minute. Prolly over 5,000 at the quietesst times. chances are good each minute someone gets 2 good hands times in a row

So, what do you attribute all these weird goings on to? Surely you're not trying to apple the R word to a 3.25 SnG? Where would the advantage be ib that? A wird run of casds, yes I grant you that. but they happen, and I hardly see how you can attach anything sinister to what you've described here. So a donk made a stupid call w/Q-10 and got lucky....one of the unfortunate truisms of low stakes poker is that sometimes donks, being donks, do dumb stuff, and sometimes Stupidity gets rewarded.

Yeah, I hear stuff like this alot.

On the weekend, had a game with mates, only a fiver in, but still a game. One person got dealt KQ 5 times in a row.

The chances are very slim, but it happens. Whether it be live games or online.

I don't think its rigged, I just think that whatever algorithms are used will never truly be like a shuffling a deck of cards.. and sometimes I wonder if its set up to put big hands against other big hands from time to time.

yes you are right heatfan, i have emailed pokerstars one while i was kind of drunk complaining about this same thing. they emailed me back with bunch of crap and the odds of someone hitting a flop and the odds of A coming on flop and K and Q and etc etc. I believe i deleted this email, but if i can find it i will make sure to post it in here.
Also another reason this and bad beats happen is because poker sites like pokerstars and full tilt deal over 1 million hands everyday. that's a lot of hands and the chances are yes you might get AA 3 times or 4 times in a row. I think I'm going to go check my email and try to find the one sent to me by stars, i hope i will find it.

Self-reporting statistics are unfortunately not useful for anything. Here's the problem: People who DON'T get dealt AA three times in a row don't start threads on various messageboards saying "today I wasn't dealt AA twice in a row, either!" every day. But the people who are, do.

So a few million hands of poker get dealt every day online. Of the 100,000 people who play poker tomorrow, guess which one of them is going to make a post about how online poker is rigged?

That's right. The guy who had the worst luck, and will be dealt KK vs. AA three times in 10 minutes. It will happen to someone.

The three (probably different) guys who get dealt AA and will win the pots won't notice, and won't start a thread called "My aces held up, as they do 89% of the time."

So no, not even with hand histories will this - what this thread is about - be useful. It's bound to happen. Whoever it happens to is bound to tell people. It's not like finding a needle in a haystack, it's like finding a hand grenade in a soccer stadium. Sure, it's small, but you damn well will notice it when it goes off.

(No offense to the OP - I'd be in shock if that had happened to me, too; and I'd definitely post about it)

It's been known to happen. Being dealt AA four times in a row is not by itself enough to draw a definite conclusion that anything is rigged.

I once dealt pocket AA four times in a row, in a live game. I know it was not rigged, since I shuffled, cut and dealt every time.

Interesting string of events. But what does it all mean? It could mean a lot of things but you will never be able to come to a conclusion.

I actually recently wrote an article that addresses some of the issues of internet gambling security, including poker sites. There is a lot of speculation that internet poker may be rigged, or that hackers may be able to break into the servers, or that some players may be using "peeker" software to see other players' hole cards. There is one possibility, however, that is rarely talked about.

If you use computers on regular basis you probably know that software can often freeze up. I am talking about software made by Adobe, Microsoft and all the other leading software developers. That is the kind of software that (we hope) goes through rigorous debugging before it hits the market. Well, software that runs the poker sites is developed by smaller companies that do not have the same resources such as Adobe and Microsoft.

It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the software the runs the poker sites sometimes malfunctions.

I cannot disagree with that. But I would like to add that even when you can see a live poker action, sometimes there is more to it than meets the eye.

I played in a family home game on Sunday and one player in the game was dealt KK two hands in a row followed by QQ on the third hand. Not only that, he hit a set on the flop each time. I'm pretty sure my brother wasn't juicing the game, but I've called over and asked him to write up hand histories for me to examine.

You know what's really incredible? Today I was dealt 67o, then the next hand 93o, then the next hand KTs, then 22, and then J5s. What are the odds of this string of consecutive hands ever happening to me again?! I have never been consecutively dealt 67, 93, KTs, 22, J5s in live poker! Thus I contend it is rigged!

(get the point?)

There would be something wrong if anomalies like that DIDNT happen from time to time.

That said, I look at situations like this from a completely different angel.

What am I going to do about it?

Im not talking about making some lame ass report but RATHER what AM I AS A PLAYER GOING TO DO.

Am I going to let this affect my game? Do I really think I am being scammed or cheated? If the answer is yes then DONT PLAY.

Otherwise accept the fact that anywhere you have lots of money being thrown around you have a good likely hood that someone, somehow is going to try and figure a way to make an easy buck. If you think the site is flawed or rigged then find another site. If you think they all rigged then only play live.

My point is if you get it in your mind that it’s all fixed you are setting your self up for failure. You end up with a built in excuse for losing and that is a sure fire way to loose. Once you get these kinds of ideas in your head (it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong) its not easy letting them go.

good luck yall
