I`m better at STUD than holdem - how is that???

Hi guys, hope you are all well.

I`ve been going through my stats recently and they show I`m a better stud player than holdem.

I have played fewer stud games - 120 mtt - but I have placed in the money on on 81 occassions. I have staked just under $1,000 and won in total about $3,000 - 3 first places in amongst that.

I have played a lot more holdem games and this year I`m about $140 down - not bad for the amount of MTT I have played.

My question is, what is it that makes a good STUD player that is different to making a good holdem player, and vice versa?

I play mainly NL holdem and I play limit Stud (this could be one of the reasons?)

Thanks guys.

I tend to play better in Stud and Razz than I do in HE. I don't know if it's because you see more cards and have more information, therefore you can make better decisions or what. But if you are doing well in Stud, keep going with it.

You might be better at limit than no limit, try limit holdem if you havnt already and see how you do in that.

or maybe the people playing stud are just far worse than your usual holdem opponents?

My theory.

Very few people play stud in casinos anymore,
most peoples stud experience is in home games,
home games are loose to the point of extreme donkishness,
therefore most stud players are loose donks that can't adjust to "real" games,
hence a good solid TAG approach to stud should pay off well.

That's definitely true.

I saw some guy calling down when his opponent had AA showing. The calling station checks the river. Reveals the winning hand of trip 2s that he caught on the river. Ok...so if you are going to call all the way to the river KNOWING that you are losing to AA and you hit your card, why would you check the river?

Agree w Snake and AG. The players in stud chase way too much and are generally weak and bad. At least at the micros that I play.

I agree with the other points but this is a valid one.

I find playing STUD that patience, in the early stages, is very important.

I`m sure some of the guys don`t know what they are doing and the number of cards on show starts to puzzle them more.

Obviously, playing holdem u see your 2 hole cards then 5 community cards.

At a full stud table they can contend with their 7 + possibly as many as 20+ other cards. So I think, even more than in holdem, they concentrate on their own hand and are almost blind to other people.

Any time you get away from HE at micro limits, you'll find incredibly weak play. Often, players gety in these games with only a vague inderstanding of the gaame. In a micro HORSE tourney other night, the player to my left actually asked the table what razz was when we came to it. My stats are much better in Omaha8 than in HE, because basically you're up against people who don't have a clue.
