I would be really interested to know from everyone and anyone, how much you aim to make when you sit down and log into your chosen poker site each time.
Specifically I would be keen to know the following so that I can compare that to my goals and see if I am being unrealistic etc... 1. What stakes do you play at? (Ring games?, SNGs?, MTTs?) 2. How much do you sit down with? i.e. Do you muy in for the max in a ring game etc? Do you play a certain number of SNGs? Do you set aside a certain amount from your bankroll for each particualr session? 3. How much do you aim to be up at the end of your session? i.e. Do you aim to play 10 SNGs and win 50% of them? Do you aim to double up your buy in at a cash table? Do you have a particualr goal in mind when you log into play poker? Are you happy if you have played 2 hours at a $0.5/$1 table and are only up $20? 4. How long is each session? i.e. Do you put a time limit on how long you play? Do you quit when you lose 2 buyins or more? Do you log out after losing 3 SNG's in a row? Maybe you keep playing as long as your winning? 5. How often do you reach your target that you have set yourself? I would be really keen to learn how others think when it comes to this sort of thing. I look forward to reading your replys and getting a discussion started. |

Multi-table full ring cash games. I buy in max every time, and my only restriction on playing time is length. If I'm getting tired or tilting I'll stop. I don't aim to be up anything at the end of one session, I know that I will win at a certain rate in the long term. Whether I win or lose in an individual session doesn't matter, unless I feel I made some bad plays.

play everything
when i sit at cash game table it is usually for 60 to 100 big blinds i aim to play as good as i can play and i does not matter if im up or down if i feel i played well and just got unlucky if im down like 3 buy ins at a cash game table i would move to new table or log off well seeing i dont set a target for myself, i always make it but seriously i would like to be up like 6 to 10 BB/100 at a cash table and i reach it most of the time |

You should really never aim for a winnings goal when you sit down; it should be for time or hands. I can't find it but FP had a nice thread/blog entry on this.
It's poker, you can't 'expect' to win certain amounts when there's luck involved. What happens when you set out to win $100 on the day and sit there for 10 hours playing perfect poker, but variance keeps knocking you back? Does that mean you should quit because you didn't achieve your goals? And what if you reach your goal within the first hand at a particularly juicy table? Does that mean you should leave because you achieved your goal? Of course not! Anyways as for me: 1) 50nl, 8-tabling 2) maximum buyin every time 3,4) I don't have any profit-related goals. Winning is great, but I grind for a certain amount of time, or at until I get tired or whatever. 5) Every time ![]() |

I agree with Chuck. I play hoping to make the best decisions -- really that is the most likely way to be a winning player. Don't approach the game any other way. It's a big mistake.

I play three tables of ten dollar buy-in .5/.10 cent games. My aim is to make five dollars a day ON AVERAGE. I started with $200 and I'm up to $255 after about five days, and that's with some huge bad beats, so I'm doing pretty good so far.
My goal is to continue this until I have $625, and then I'll be playing three twenty five dollar buy-in games at the same time. Then my goal will be to make 12.5 dollars a day, and so on. I also have about a hundred tournament credits, and I'm just going to keep playing 5.50 tournament games until I'm broke or win big. |
