How do you predict the length (time) of a tournament?

Ive been playing cash games only up till this point with a few sit n gos here and there. Ive always been concerned with not having enough time to sit thru a tourney. How do you estimate how long a tourney lasts?

You can browse completed tourneys to get an idea of their runtime.

^^this is the best way. However, if your chosen tourney is an infrequent one and you can`t find a similar completed example in the lobby, a rough rule of thumb is that the number of players remaining in a standard online MTT halves about every hour.

Therefore, a 100 man tourney will take ~3 hours to reach the FT, and a 500 man will take ~5 hours. This obviously varies to some extent from site to site (and even from day to day) but gives a reasonable approximation.

hm I have looked up some of the completed tourneys on ultimatebet but there doesnt seem to be information on the time...

I like tourney but don't like to sit on the computer all day either. Try one of the Cardschat buy in tourney, usually the longest they last is 3 or so hours, plus with money added you can't go wrong.

it is honestly very tough to tell how long a tourney is going to be even huge tourneys i made $1 off the super turbo free roll 1 time i was done at 7:30 anther time i was done at 6 and anther time i was about 6:15 and that is a super turbo with the same amount of players

Why only on ultimate bet? You should try full tilt... I find the format way easier, and they always have time stamps for tournament start and end times in the tournament lobby.

Alot is relative to the $ of players,how many min the blinds are,and the buy in. For instance if you are in a 7500 person freeroll the first hr at least half the players will be gone. If you are in a tourny with 7500 people and a $50 buy in there probably want be any more than 2k people gone in the first hr. The play usually becomes tighter and better the higher the buy in and loose and reckless the lower the buy in.
