| How the average player can make money in online poker. How the average player can make money in online poker: 1) First - admit that you are, in fact, an average poker player and that you are NOT going to get rich quick playing online poker. It is going to be a LONG HARD GRIND. 2) As an average poker player you should have an average bankroll. $500 - $1000 should do it. 3) NEVER, NEVER EVER... a) Go beyond the $25 max buy-in No Limit table. b) Pay more than $20 in a Sit n Go. c) Go beyond the $1/$2 Limit Poker games. d) Pay more than $20 in a MTT. Why? Because although most, who play above these stakes, are probably worse than you, A SMALL BUT SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT ARE BETTER!! YOU WILL TAKE A LITTLE FROM THE BAD PLAYERS BUT THE SIGNIFICANT FEW WILL EAT YOU UP AND TAKE YOUR MONEY!!! *The significant few are the ones who have the significantly bigger bankroll than you* 3) Play solid, solid, solid. That's it! Oh, the profit? If you play regularly for about 3-5 hours per day then expect to make about $500-$1000 per year. Enjoy! |

| OK, explanation is in order: Unless you are well bankrolled, very good at self-discipline, able to be on your "A" game for most of the time, a bit lucky and very dedicated - you aint gonna make much playing online poker. I just wanna get this message across to the young kids out there. They need to be warned. |

if your not self disciplined - dont play if you are not going to play A game - why bother playing luck and dedication - dont matter by the way there are a lot of players that have started out playing small stakes as bad players or ok players and worked there ways up and are now playing the big games online. And $25 nl is horrible place to compare because the players play just as bad at $200 NL. take this for instance I shoved on guys raise last night for $35 and he called me with JT?!?!? yea much better players at that level lol. | [quote=stormswa;564156]if you are not bankrolled - dont play if your not self disciplined - dont play if you are not going to play A game - why bother playing luck and dedication - dont matter Post was aimed at average players. There is a massive difference between: "not bankrolled" and "well bankrolled" "not self disciplined" and "very good at self-discipline" "not playing "A" game" and "able to be on your "A" game for most of the time". I would have thought that you would know the importance of quoting accurately. |

| Wow! Thanks for the advice. I think I make about $.75 - $1.50 on a cash game table in maybe 10 hands, depending on the blinds. And here I am, making about $20+ an average daily. Wow, what am I thinking. If I knew I could be making between $500-$1000 in profit a year with your method, I wouldnt be wasting so much time making so much more. And all I need is a starting BR of $500 - $1000. Amazing! |

Look. What the hell is the matter with you people? Obviously quite a few of you guys are good at poker and make good money from doing so. My post was intended to show the harsh reality of poker if you are just an average player wanting to take online poker seriously. Last edited by TurnipHead : 25th June 2007 at 12:47 AM. |

LOL. How about telling new/average players that they shouldnt play online poker in the hopes of getting rich quick. There is a chance that they might get a good run in an MTT or a nice run of SNGs to build up their bankroll. They shouldnt bank on the hope that they'll become instant millionares. At the same time, what is the point of playing if your average goal is a whopping $.75 - $1.50 profit a day? Its not even worth it. Simple: -Buy in with an amount you're comfortable playing with. -Play games/buy-ins you are comfortable playing. -Expect wins and expect losses. -Play solid, straight poker and try to improve your game everytime you play. |

I'm just trying to get my head around the fact that the person who can make $20+ a day at poker is the same person who writes such self-contradictory gobble-de-gook as this!! |

| average players can and will make money in the long run, bad players will never make money in long run. The bad players will make money in short term. there are these players at every single level. There are horrible players playing 5/10. For instance some dude wins a $50 tourney, his 1st tourney ever online. It happens. so he banks lets say 10k because it was huge field, he is not a good player but he ran very well. Now he goes and plays 5/10 NL because he is not good and knows nothing about bankroll managment. Now a average player can and will take his money after awhile. as for playing the good players, well of course you are going to play good players. Against those guys you just play tight and only play good hands against them. This post is pointless, its basically saying average players wont make decent money which is silly. I dont think any regular on this forum thinks they are going to become millionares playing poker. You have the grinders here, the people that just deposit to play what they want, maybe some gamblers. There are all different types of players and all have different things they play poker for. Do I think one day I could win a lot of money online? beats me never really thought I needed to. are there new players that think they are going to make tons of money online? of course but after a couple sittings hopefully they still dont think that after busting out couple times. I know when I started playing online I never thought about being a pro and dont think most people do. |

How is this self-contradicting? All Im saying is that your 'advice' is pretty weak. Im not saying its horrible advice, but seriously... Quote:
How is this solid advice for anyone? This can be said at any stakes and if thats true, then whats the point of playing if you're worried about the "significant few that'll eat you up"? And then you suggest an average player should have a BR of $500 - $1000. LOL. why? because of their micro - low limit losses they can expect? Your advice, in a nutshell is: Have BR of $500 - $1000, dont play or go above those limits listed above, and expect an average of $.75 - $1.50 in profits a day and you can make between $500 - $1000. Cool. I think I can make more if I just deposited $20 into a poker site and put the rest of the $500 - $1000 into savings and let it grow with interest. Oh and with $20 buy-in I deposited, I can easily make an average of $.75 - $1.50 in micro limits and possibly make $1000 in a year. Genius. |

| I should add-I appreciate what you are doing and I understand your intentions and what you are getting at. Im not trying be a jerk or anything. I just think your advice is a bit off and poorly explained. If you're a new/average player, dont try jumping into limits you arent familiar with/cant afford to play. |

Of course, some average players will take a shot at the big one and hit the jackpot. Some kids will fail all their exams at school and then become rich and famous. There are always exceptions to the rule. But I stand by my claim that overall, generally speaking, average players will not make huge amounts of poker at online poker and should stay at the "safe" limit tables if they want to enjoy playing poker long-term and if they want to make any profit at all. |

that right there pretty much sums up what origional poster was trying to say perfect. Now if origional post would of said that no one would have argued. |

limits do not and I repead DO NOT MATTER if you have good bankroll managment skills. I dont care what you say that is a fact, a new player could depost 10k and play $500 NL as long as they have the disapline to drop down when they lose enough not to be bankrolled for that level they will not go broke. but thats a little extreme let me get the levels smaller for you. Say you are brand new to poker and have no idea what your skill level is. You have a good job so this money you are putting on is not your like life savings but you dont want to deposit again. You have read the books and know what they say so where do we start? Ok so you have 1k to play with and make the deposit where do you start playing $10 NL? no $25 NL? no well in theroy you could but you would waste alot of time getting sample sizes here to figure out where you belong. instead lets follow correct bankroll managment, we know the 1/2 NL game is $200 buy in right? so do we have bankroll for that lets see 200 x 20 = $400...nope we dont have that. ok lets move down one level. The .50/1 is a buy in of $100 so do we have the buy in for that lets see. $100x 20 = 2k nope still dont have it. ok .25/.50 is a buy in of $50 and 50x20= 1k ...yes we have that now lets see proper bankroll managment states that we can only play that level until we drop around or below 10 buy ins so we can play that level until we notice we are not that good or our bankroll drops below $500, and at that time we would move down to .10/.25 until our bankroll reached above $1000 again. pretty simple huh? simple easy and if you follow these easy steps you will not go bust and you will make plenty in long run |

Your summing up of my advice is pretty accurate. As an average poker player one should not expect to make huge amounts of money. But by keeping to those limits, that player can enjoy playing poker long-term and as a leisure activity (not as a serious way to make money). As a keen poker player who likes to play, then a half-decent BR is required - depositing $20 and expecting/hoping it to grow to $1000 may be doable by a good player such as yourself but not a reasonable expectation for your average player. I cannot answer your point about the "significant few" at present. I am tired and it's 2 O'clock in the morning! I gotta hit the sack. |

How is this not doable by an average player when your advice is that they should expect to make $.75 - $1.50 average in profits daily in order to make $1000 in a year? And you suggest they have a starting BR of $500 - $1000. Note: I know that isnt the point of your thread, but Im just pointing it out. Anyway, I think Stormswa and I summed up what you were trying to say perfectly. Im done speaking...unless you respond with something that I feel I have to reply to. If thats how you want to play, then I cant say anything about it because its your money. You do what you do. GGPO. |
