I'm not an expert at heads up play (I'm just making an initial response since nobody else has yet). However, I can readily state that the strategy for a heads up game is completely different to a regular holdem game.
You're no longer looking to wait for a premium hand, no longer looking to make top pair, and so on. You'll be seeing the vast majority of flops, unless it's too expensive, because you'll rarely be badly behind before the flop, and if you get any pair on the flop it may well be the best hand. The net result is that neither of you are playing premium hands, so there's more of a challenge to put someone on a hand. However, that's very much what heads up play is about - reading what your opponent has. It also changes the relative values of hands. Even moderate to weak pocket pairs go up in value, because they will normally be the favourite pre-flop, while you don't have enough money being put into the pot to give value to suited connectors. Often drawing hands will offer poor pot odds to chase. If you can trick your opponent into paying off a hand then you can make that up with implied odds, but you need to know what you can get your opponent to pay when you make a hand. The general consensus seems to be that skill is more important in a heads up game, because you're focussed on one opponent, and your reading skills and pot manipulation skills have a significant effect, while players chasing poor draws will not get the additional callers needed to make their plays less bad. Understanding the maximum size raise an opponent will call is also important, as is recognising when both of you have a weak hand so you can take a pot despite missing the cards you wanted. It tends to be rather different to the final stage of a SnG or MTT because the blinds start off low, so a short run of bad cards will not be as crippling, which allows skill to rise above the luck factor as the cards even out. |
