Hey I'm new to the forum and need some advice...I've always played 1-2nl live and never had a problem beating the game...sure I've taken hits but never had a swing like this.. i usually play tournaments anywhere from a sng 40 people to 150 people and never have a problem doing extremely well but lately ive tried to play more cash..i set aside a 4k BR for 1-2nl..i just moved down to Florida where the buyin is 200max. in the last week my bankroll went from 4k to 2300 in massive amounts of bad beats and coolers and has me questioning my entire game. do you guys think i should take a break and try and come back? I've never asked for advice but i know it helps to talk to others who went through the same thing

ill admit i guess i made some bad plays but i believe most were coolers...i.e i flopped the jack high flush i got it all in with top set he turns a boat...a.k suited all in vs 99 he flops a set...i flopped a set guy rivers a straight..i know some plays could have been avoided but i feel as if there's no intellectual poker here.
if a player has an overpair there never folding..top top is the nuts to these people which i should be taking advantage of but i try and make a move as a semi bluff or move someone off a hand and theres no way there ever folding

I just experienced what you had, a break can help if you think your game is suffering. if you think you are still playing the same as always and been in lots of situations where theres been literally nothing you can do, just perservere and it will come right.

Me personally, a break does nothing I go on tilt even more if I step away from the game for a few days only to return to the same crap.

You only had 20 buy-ins for cash to start with, now you have 10? I'd suggest moving down in limits, even if you think you can beat a limit, 10 buy-ins at 2nl isn't going to be enough to withstand the swings and at those limits I'm guessing it's quite easy to drop 10buy-ins.

Why no play a limit where you have 50buy-ins and build your roll up? At least there is less chance of you going broke.

Fair enough..

Why not try depositing some of this money online then, grinding say even 50nl? Ok this might seem boring, but for this you would have plenty of buy-ins and can build up a roll (I assume you're good enough) Then once you have 8k, you have sufficient funds to take these bad beat.

I certainly wouldn't be brave enough playing the limits you are with only 10 buy-ins, I don't think it matters how good you are. I think I'd only play limit hold em at best at those amounts :p

Anyway, best of luck - if you don't play online then I hope you do well at cash but on a personally, 10 buy-ins I think you're risking ruin for something you worked so hard for.

EDIT: Nevermind! I see you're from newyork, ignore the playing online post.

I guess I'm out of options, apart from maybe playing LIMIT hold em or unless there is a site for U.S players?

my friend whos been playing forever suggests i just play extremely tight aggressiveand i really think thats the best solution I just dont want to lose the rest of my roll i feel like if i sit down with 100 and i get dealt a hand like AK suited or kq suited and i raise to 10 and c bet 15 thats 25 percent of my stack

I think your using the 5% bankroll ( 20 buy in)
I hate to say it but try to raise your bankroll requirements...
I know it hard to do when with live games the smallest is 1/2 levels...but take a break and start putting money back towards your bankroll..
playing tight aggressive is the right way to go ...when you are trying to get a read on the table and who is the sucker....I am fish , and who is the sharks

Yep-I agree. If you play limits "above your bankroll", you may make bad decisions like folding when you would normally call or pushing all in when you normally would not. Beat the lower limits and move up when you have a good size bankroll. ;)

Unfortunately I don't think there are any good answers. The fact is that downswings will happen even if you're playing well and being properly rolled for the games you're playing is the only real protection.

Given there aren't any lower games you're short on options. You can take a shot at the same games with your remaining roll, play your best and hope to run good, knowing that you run the trisk of losing it all. You could try to find a lower stakes home game, though that's rarely a sustainable regular option. Or you can just stop playing and maybe come back when you've made enough to be properly rolled from some other income source. Those are the choices.

Playing limit games is a terrible idea BTW (unless you're actually good at them). If you don't know how to play LHE you'll still lose your roll, it'll just take a little longer.

i took a couple of days off and it did wonders...i had such bad beats tonight but lost the minimum on every hand i had over 20 pocket pairs tonight and didnt flop a set once. made a terrible fold with an over pair and would have tripled my money and lost with kk to qq all in pre flop. but i kept my cool and ended up leaving the night up $430 at 1-2nl
