There's no doubt he's a good player.

However, I think he has a lot of money and plays in games where's he's simply just not good enough for the games he plays. I'm in no doubt he could beat high stakes, but not the absolute nose bleed stakes.

Really, he's not good enough for a stake? I'm a beginner but it blows my mind, thinking there are levels above the likes of Gus. I guess he could hang tough but it would be more gambling.

I could be wrong, but Gus plays all games and didn't HighstakesDB only track hold 'em games for a long time?

That doesn't necessarily explain away the losses, of course - it could actually mean he's even FURTHER than $7m in the hole :p

He definitely needs to be a winner player on the live high stakes cash game, but we will never know..

I think what we can learn from this story is risk only what we can afford to lose and keep a stop loss. Cant go wrong if we follow this principle whether its in the stock market, casino or online poker.

its because online poker is a lot different than live poker. there are a number of pros that are in the negative online. online you cant read anyone and rely on position a lot more. in live games position is a big factor, but it is a hell of a lot easier to put your money in when you can get a good read on someone. it is much easier for internet players to switch to live play than a live player to switch to internet play

Eh?

I never mentioned anything about being staked..

Gus is good; but he's no where near as good imo as the top players he plays with. They just destroy him and it has been known for the top players to say Gus is a player plenty of players are willing to play; indicating he's a fish for the stakes he plays.

so what you are saying is...... the bigger stakes you play, the better player you are? Gus is a good player, and would no doubt win more than lose, in a live game with the same players! just because you got money to play with does not mean you are good by any means... and if gus wouldve been playing lower stakes, he prolly wouldve lost just the same but for not as much money. he is not the only pro in the negative in online poker!

Gus is a well respected player and I'm sure he's a nice guy but he's definitely fallen behind the field over the years and struggles with both online and live...

I think at one point in 2011 he was on a bit of a heater and had picked up about $6m online (still down lifetime though), then he followed that by being 2012's biggest loser.

Are people completely missing what I'm saying? lol.

Yes of course the bigger stakes you play the better the players are, this is just common knowledge.

I'm struggling to understand what you're quoting me for? It seems you think I have said the opposite of what I'm saying lol.

I said; Gus is not good ENOUGH to beat the players he plays in the highest stakes. He just simply can't beat them, but he has the money to obviously throw away hence the reason he doesn't move down. If at some point his poker bankroll starts to drop to much and he hasn't got any more money incoming, then obviously he wont be able to continue playing at the stakes he does.

Simply put; Gus doesn't and hasn't ever made any income from high stakes online cash games, but still obviously can afford to feed the sharks there.

If Gus was playing lower stakes, I'm sure he can beat them. However, the guys at the absolute highest stakes are worlds apart from other "good" players which includes gus and all the best online players are more than happy sitting him.

Wow. how is this guy a professional? Losing that much effect his psyche tremendously. Maybe time to pick up chess?

Nah, probably needs to go back to backgammon.

But I love Gus. Hope these numbers don't continue. :(

Gus has always had big swings in his game.
I think when was playing backgammon he had the same thing happening.

Either way Gus is really fun to watch.

I agree Leo that he is fun to watch. Im a keen follower of the high stakes games on full tilt, entertaining to watch, feel bad for those that lose big as well.
