Going for it...Time to make a run for the big bucks!!!

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING POST TOTALLY DISREGARDS PROPER BANKROLL MANAGEMENT AND SHOULD ONLY BE ATTEMPTED BY GAMBLERS. NEWBIES LOOKING FOR INFO ON GOOD STRATEGY SHOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE!!!!!!

My recent lack of money has made me decide to make a run for the big bucks. Some call it a 'Rampage'. I pretty much started on Sunday. I hit a couple big hands on a $10NL table and decided to risk it all on a $25NL table. Spent most of the day playing $25NL and and a hell of a run. Now I'm going to see how far I can get. I'm not stopping until I bust or make it to the High stakes tables.

Now since I do need money to pay bills I'm going not going to risk everything on the next stakes. I'm going to make sure I'm able to bank my buy-in for the level I'm at and have enough for a full buy-in at the next level.

Today I'm starting off at the $25NL tables. Once I get this $25 built up to $75 I'm going to bank the $25 and move to $50NL.

Progress so far:

216
Hands

Roll: $53

Bank: $0

Good luck, Jim. I won't preach to you about how your BR management is not the norm. It sounds like you know that already. Have you tried $5 SnG's? Might be a little easier to build your BR with less risk. Also, you might want to read my latest blog post regarding a mistake I recently made regarding moving up in stakes.

But just in case some unsuspecting newbie reads this, I will say that I wouldn't recommend doing what Jim is doing. The standard consensus among poker experts is that a player should only risk 10% of his total bankroll at a time. Even then, I believe comfort is also a factor.

Anyway. Again, good luck to Jim.

EDIT: LOL! Excellent disclaimer, Jim.

There you go Sticker...added a little disclaimer .
I've been having a really bad run with SNG's and tournaments lately so I'm staying away as much as possible. I also figure that since i'm setting myself strict guidelines on banking profits and stopping when I bust I don't see there being a risk for much loss except for time. The profit potential is pretty good since I do have a plan for banking at every stake. If I bust in any level I'm just going to move back down to $25NL tables where I do almost have the proper BR for and will follow proper BR management.

This is more for an adventure and some extra money to get some bills caught up.

I will check out the blog though.

I'll add the disclaimer too ... if your learning the game pay proper attention to your bankroll management. If you want to be one of the fish that good players feed on do what JimboJim is doing right now.

LOL That being said, I'll gamble once in a while myself but the more I do gamble the more I realize I'm better off staying within my money management scheme.

Maybe one of CC's math genius's could give us the odds of what this kind of action is.

In my personal experiance the odds are pretty thin, maybe 1 out of 20 times I try this kind of thing it pays off. I lost 300 bucks once playing live and needed my last 60 bucks to last till payday. nevermind I shouldn't have lost the orignal 300! I got in a tournament that cost me 40 bucks of my 60 and thank god I made the final table winning around 800.

Now I've not done this 20 times ... I rarely do it... I think I've done it 3 times and I lost twice and had to scramble for survival money. So for me it's a personal 1 out of 3 win and that was just plain LUCKY. You can't depend on luck in poker, I have since adjusted my attitude and WILL NOT do this anymore.

But that being said .....GOOD LUCK JimboJim

Hmm, so is this something like playing blackjack, where when you're on a run, you double up your bet on the following hand?

It might be fun to do; start with $10, if you lose it, that's it, go back to your regular game/bankroll management. If you get it up to $25, try the next limit, ect. Wasn't Chris Ferguson or someone trying to do this starting with nothing and trying to win freerolls to start?

Anyway, gl Jimbo. Make sure you know when to stop.

Pretty much what I'm doing but I'm going to bank the buy-in for each level. When I get to $75 I'll bank $25 and put $50 on the .25/.50 tables. Once I get to $150 there I'll bank $50 and put $100 on the .50/$1 tables. That way I don't really need to set a goal and can keep moving up until I eventually lose a level and I'll still have profit.

Well Jim ... you had the best of it pre-flop and got your chips in. As Phil says if it wasnt for luck he'd win them all.

Nice try.

Better luck next run.

It sounds like a fun thing to try every now and then, and compare how far you get each time. Just keep it outside of your regular bankroll.

Awwwwww. But seriously I could never consider going up in stakes to win money faster and then go broke in a matter of a hand or two, just to be left with nothing. I worked really hard to build my bank roll at all these sites and I cannot allow myself to do such a thing. Although we all know that I have made some pretty foolish moves, but I learned by them I have one hell of a long way to go, but with the blogs and posts I've come one hell of a long way too
I've seen story after story about moving up in stakes.......you have to move up for the right reasons and at the right time

Thats why I start at my regular tables and take only my winnings up with me. This time all I was out was just 1 buy-in.

Yup, but as Jimbo says, all he's out is one buy-in because he didn't use any other money.

I'd like to give a try, someday when I'm actually winning. The midst of a downswing probably isn't a good time.

Exactly the problem with this kind of approach. There's just too much variance to survive when you're moving up consistently having virtually your entire bankroll on the table. The amount of luck it would require to survive it all the way up to the top without so much as taking one completely crippling bad beat, cooler, or misplay is just inconceivable.

Very true...1 bad beat can kill you. I just find it fun to do whenever I'm looking for an adventure. I've seen people put 1/2 their bankroll on a single MTT or ring buy-in. This gives me almost the same adventure but risks a lot less. Even after I lost I'm still hovering betwwen a proper bank for $10 and $25 ring games so it didnt really hurn...just wasted a couple days of time

I have often considered doing what you have done here, and just may do that next week, tbh though I'll jump on a $.05/.10 table with $5 and see where I go from there.
Wanna have a race Jim, maybe this weekend, we're both night owls, shouldn't be a problem.
We'll both take $5 and sit at separate tables and see where it takes us.
Are you game?
