Getting a book - which?

I've played poker for about a year now, still have never read a poker book just played off of playing.

I decided I want to read a little before making a big deposit (never had a bankroll over $500). So, what book would you recommend for a intermediate player.

I play No Limit ring tables and tournaments, and sometimes Limit ring tables.

I am more interested in a good No Limit book.

I looked at ag's library post, didn't even know where to start

Or save some of that money for your deposit and go to your local library. My library has the HoHs and many Sklansky books. Read whatever you can find for free, become a winning player, use your winnings to buy some books.

free is always good

start with harrington on holdem{ all 3}and then move on to super systems{both of them} and then read sklansky,

but super systems is not only about holdem it features section on different games

I'm currently looking at the HoH books, they look like the best ones

That reminds me of a post, it might have been by you pantin, explaining how you can exploit the other games, besides hold em, because most people don't know the proper play for these other games. What do people think about that?

I have seen some bad reviews on Super System being outdated.

Yeah I know. I would love to get my hands on a low stakes NL ring game book. I guess that's why I'm here at cc though...

Phil Gordon's Little Green Book, and Little Blue Book are also mighty fine.

but everyone goes and plays holdem off the bat but IMO if u want the same kind of action but horible players, u should play PLO
and there are way to much fish at 7 card stud, 2 to 7 lowball, razz, some decent players at horse, omaha 8 is filled with chasers{ just like plo except worse}
in my oppinion there is much more money to be won at these games than at nlhe just because most of the ppl at 50c-1$ limits at these games are fish

I may have voiced a similar opinion on the original Super System recently, though it was only in relation to the NLHE section. And it wasn't so much that the principles of play it recommends are outdated (being aggressive, capitalising on your opponent's weakness, etc) as the style of opponents you'll likely to face has changed over the years.

That's not the reason I wouldn't recommend it though. The reason I wouldn't recommend it as a first poker book in this case is that, first and foremost, it's a high stakes text. If you're applying it to a $500 bankroll... hell, in the NLHE section Doyle talks about sitting down with $20K at a time. And that was some 30 years ago.

Haven't read the second edition, so I can't comment on it.

Also you're right, Harrington on Hold 'em deals specifically with tournament play, not ring games. Some of the concepts will transfer over, but he also dedicates a lot of time to tournament-specific concepts.
