Forbes Magazine: Are The Feds Cracking Down on Poker?

Personally, I think it brings unwanted attention to the issue. Your thoughts?

I saw absolutely nothing new in that article. Rehash of old crap mostly.

I agree, nothing new to us - the people that play poker everyday but to the average Joe that doesn't even know the first thing about online poker, it is.

The way I found out about it was that my father came over to me and started saying (everything I already knew) that the regulations are set to to be effective this June, about Congressman Barney Frank, it being a game of skill vs. luck....etc. He read the article. Before reading the article, he had no idea on the legality of it, the laws, etc....and neither does the average person in the U.S.

Now I wonder how an article like this, published in a extremely popular and respected publication like Forbes, will affect the public opinion of online poker? And could it affect the eventual outcome?

I'm not American, these guys have no jurisdiction over me.

I still don't understand why the US government cares... I mean why dont they just ban casinos too?? Where can you draw the line? Gambling online is illegal but in real life in certain places its not? Seems stupid to me.

They risk upsetting the bible-bashers.

They also don't like anything that might let money flow out of the US.

My Representative is against it because my state has B&M casinos and she doesn't want anything to compete with the $$$$$$$ they bring in. It hypocrisy at it's finest. "Don't gamble online because it's bad for you. Come to our casino instead so we can rake in dollars."

Politics-Money-self interest. Remember that this is a country that banned booze at one time.

You know what's funny? They say poker is gambling and should be banned but they legalize horse racing, Super Lotto, and sportsbooking, which involves more element of chance than poker. Only reason is because government receives tax from it. I just don't get how poker should be banned but allow Super Lotto and Horse Racing.

It is stupid. It is also illegal in international law, and the World Trade Organisation has ruled against the USA on this issue and permitted foreign countries affected by loss of trade to claim compensation from the US.

Problem is, most countries affected are small and politically inconsequential. The only powerful country which was severely affected is the United Kingdom and the UK government is not interested in having an argument with their close ally over what is seen as a relatively trivial issue in international affairs.

Alot of bible bashers must read Forbes, you should read some of the comments on that article, alot of anit poker feelings.

Legislators are looking for the best way to tax & regulate it.

The same companies (B&M casinos) who lobbied to criminalize it in 2006 are lobbying to legalize it now - but in a way in which benefits them. Go figure....
