First time playing live poker
I walked into the casino for the first time tonight after a long awaited 19 years. I decided to start off playing some table games. With $500 in my pocket I quickly made a hundred bucks and cashed it in. I asked the lady if there was a poker room to which she responded no, only 4 card. I found it a little weird that there was no poker room so i went back to table games. On my way to the bar I noticed a giant room with POKER on the door. I walked in with my $300 and not really knowning what to do I said, where do I play. There were 6 tabels going and I sat at $1/$2 with $440, Im not sure how since the limit online is $200 but I didnt ask question to avoid looking dumb. I folded my first 25 hands and about 90 mins in I got dealt pocket 7's on the button. With everyone calling behind me I make it $12 to play. Everyone folds cept for 1 guy who called it.
Flop comes, 7d 10d Jc. I hit trips, it felt awesome. He checks it to me and I make it $25 to play. He calls it. Turn comes, 2h I figure he is on a flush draw so I push all in for $220 more or so. He calls and flips over 8 9. I sat there as he took down a huge pot not really knowing what to say or do. It was one of the funnest times in my entire life and I will definatley be back, but doesnt everyone have to have a beat like this sooner or later in their life? Story to tell forever, thats for sure. |

This is poker... I had the same kind of "problems" on my last (and first playing) visit to Vegas - BUT still I love it - The excitement of the Poker room in the big hotels is amazing - I cannot wait to get back there!

With my limited live play i think you'll be getting called by any flush draw, 2 pr type hands, a naked J, or maybe even worse. And of course this isn't every player, but the majority of the 1/2 tables i've played at. |

You're new here, as I am, so I'll be as diplomatic as possible. A bunch of us are trying to get to the 50 post threshold to be eligible for the FR's again, but I still try to be as accurate and insightful as possible. Shark was talking about his first experience playing live, so comparing it to Fulltilt is irrelevant. Shark read draw, when the player already flopped the nuts, with 8 9, not 7 8. It turned out to be a classic HU coin flip situation, a pr vs. two overs. This is a common strategy, albeit usually reserved for late tourney play. That's one reason "why what player stayed in the hand preflop." I apologize if this comes across as a flame, I don't mean it to be. As a noob to the site myself, I go to great lengths to make sure my responses are germane to the original post, and accurate. To the mods, I hope I didn't overstep any boundaries, just trying to help. |

I recently did the same thing. I always play BlackJack and I dont like to play my money on luck. So my dad and brother started playing in the poker room so i joined and started with 50 in a 1/2 game. I was up about 300 and they had a couple tough beats where my kicker was just slightly beaten

My first trip to Vegas (of age) was awesome. I played the 1/2 game at the Luxor 4 out of my 6 nights there and I loved it. I took home an average of $250 a night there. =)
That trip definitely gave me the confidence boost that I needed. |

that's poker alright, you were new and the regulars knew it, that's my guess, you folded too much- probably do to inexperience w/ live games, waited for good hand & got one. but it's all a learning process you will do better next time, i'm sure. as always good luck at the tables.

Beer is right. There's no reason to ever fold a set here unless one of the draws comes. 1/2 is extremely fishy. I'd expect even KJ to get all-in here some of the time.
By the way, there was no need to sit down with $440. If $200 is allowed (it almost always is) and you're most comfortable starting with 100BB, then sit down with that much. Anyone who thinks you're a fish for sitting down with 100BB is out of their mind. Honestly, I think it looks fishier to sit down with an odd number like $440. It looks like you just brought chips straight from the table games, so you might be more of a gambler than a poker player. |

Last nite I was at the Bellagio. I was watching the 10/20 no limit game. Some guys I guess who had nothing better to do started calling hands or raising without looking at their cards. Their river bets got up to $400. I guess these guys had the TMM disease (To Much Money). One guy walked away with 30K. Nothing surprises me in a live setting anymore. Having enough money guys will call or raise with anything.

its always tough for me when im in that situation, especially when i see a straight or flush draw possibility. in your particular situation there was nothing you could do. if you tried to trap with your set you would have gotten trapped by his straight. i would have done almost the same in that situation, as 77 is my favorite hand, and i would have lost all my money as well

Yeah this exact same thing actually happened to me yesterday. I have pocket jacks and the flop jack king 9, i bet, he raises, i re-raise all-in and of course he has queen 10, its just part of poker eventhough you make the right play

thats a tought hand to lose there. ne thing ive learned going to play 1/2 in casinos is that its better to sit at a 2/5 tables. 1/2 has toooooooo many calling stations. no matter what the raise, limp call limp call.

![]() There's actually something to take away from this though, even for the lower limits - while people log onto an online poker site to play poker, there are loads of people who go to casinos to gamble. They don't necessarily care if the game is poker or blackjack or baccarat. Which is why you'll occasionally see things like the above, and also why in the absence of any strong reads to the contrary it's often OK to get your money in with a set on a straightening board like the OP did. |

At least you had fun. I've played a bunch of live poker, but only at bars and home games. I've taken in quite a bit of "free" money and little pots, but have yet to play at a casino. I will soon, though.
