First few sessions with HEM How long did it take you to get used to using and understanding your HUD? I just finished my third hour long session with the software and am still not getting it just yet. I understand what the stats mean just not how to quickly look at the info and apply it to the table. I had help setting it up and am using it for 4 tables tiled. I played 4 before the HUD, my win loss rate hasn't changed much since I installed it. I am just wondering how long I can expect it to help start improving my game. I have plenty of patience and didnt expect a miracle as soon as the install was finished.

The stats aren't a key for flat-off winning. You can't go, well I put myself in this situation, now what do I do based on the HUD. You can factor in the HUD stats with what the board is and your cards in hand. The board and cards imo, are most of the time, more important than the HUD stats. Use it as a tool. They should give you an idea of what you already know just by observing the others play while you sit there. If you are multi-tabling HUD is a key for people to make good split-second decisions with little time in hand. Last edited by wsorbust : 11th May 2009 at 4:07 AM.

I've been using one for a few months now, and I'm still learning. There is so much to it that I doubt there isn't always more to learn. The more you use it to gather info on the same opponents, the more useful it will become. At first, you may not be able to make much inference into the way they play, but it will get better. When I played one table tournaments, I didn't see much use for a HUD other than studying afterwards. But now that I multi-table cash games, I can't see how anyone could play without one.

re: First few sessions with HEM poker Start really really basic for the HUD imo. If you're not used to using one, just start out using vpip/pfr. If you're not already familiar with these stats these are the first ones you should attempt to become familiar with for the HUD and just for poker discussions in general. Although they are only preflop numbers, usually you can tell a lot about their attitude towards the game just from those numbers, for example a 67/5 (sees 67% of flops only raises 5%) just calls way too much. Sometimes it'll only be preflop but likely they are a calling station postflop. I'm not sure what you have on the HUD but especially trying to start out with it knowing how often a villain donk bets the turn after calling a flop cbet in a 3-bet pot really is not going to help you. A HUD is no substitute for reads and notes, but when you multi-table it's sometimes the best you can do. So yeah, I'd just try to keep it simple and take all but the bare minimum stats off, and as you learn to use them better and better you can add some other stats.

Thanks for advice. I am starting to get the hang of it now, I am using a written cheat sheet that I have to look at less and less and have color coded the few stats I am using. For the time being, Im trying to use it to justify my decisions instead of looking at it and then making my decision. Man --poker is a lot of work!! |
