| Epiphany I need to replace the word "if" with the word "when" in my poker vocabulary. I always say "if", but I'm starting to think the "if" is doing something with my subconscious. It sort of gives me permission to fail. "When" on the other hand does no such thing. There's no time limit on "when". "When" can come soon, or it can come late, but sooner or later it will come. "When" and "will" are positives while "if" is a negative. Maybe all this belongs in my blog, but I was thinking I may not be alone. I was thinking I can't possibly be the only one with a little psychological glitch. Anyhow, I'm believing, right or wrong, that good or bad, everyone wins. The secret's gotta be in maximizing the wins and minimizing the losses. So from now on the mantra's "When I win, I will win the most I can. When I lose I will lose the least I can". I know it sounds strange, putting the word "lose" in a positive mantra. But losing like winning is inevitable. I'm an odd duck, I feel just as good about folding well as winning a hand, and I feel like losing the least amount of money or chips possible is similar. I believe it's something to feel good about. Owning the loss, but at the same time knowing I lost as little as possible, and handled it well, would I believe make me a better player overall, and maybe even a better person. After all this, at least I always had the "how" and the "why" in place. "How"? By playing my best of course, and like everyone my best keeps getting better. "Why"? Silly, but I love it. |
