Edinburgh University Poker Open - 2nd :)

Hey guys.

Just got back (4am) from the Edinburgh University Poker Open! A 2 day event starting sunday, finishing monday.. £30 buy-in, 61 players (but all quality players unlike UK Student Poker Championships.. fish ahooooy)

Never the less, starting stack was 10k with blinds 25-50 and 45 min levels all through till the end, yet after 5 hands and a bluff against (what i didnt know at the time) was the best player in Scotland pretty much, I was down to 4k!!!

I slowly grinded back to 20k by the end of day 1, average been 30 when it was the last 20 players!

Second day I started by going down to 12k!!! Disaster! Then, I made a move with Aces and got called... but the hand that really cracked it...

The guy 2 seats to my right (Dafyd) was a super aggressive player. he didn't like me much. Everytime it was my big blind, he'd raise 2nd to act just to annoy me!!!! Well, it was his big blind and I was short stacked pretty much. Was folded round to me 8 handed with blinds on about 2000, 4000. I had to make a move sometime, and decided it was this.

I looked at my 4-3 off suit, and saw the guy in the small blind with his hands holding cards ready to fold. It was me versus the big blind. He'd have to put in another 8000 ontop of his 4000, and he's a calling station but he knows I know that, and usually stays clear of my raises! I hadn't played a hand all morning except Aces.

I went all in, and he called!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO He showed his Ace 9.. NOOOOOOOOOOO

The flop brought K95! NOOOOOOOOO

The turn brought 6

The river brought.. you guessed it.. a 7 !!!!

I made the straight on the river for a pot of 52k which went down very nicely!

A revolution more and I look at my hand on the button.. it's 7-8 off suit. Folded round to me, and small blind in his tight manner was ready to fold once more. I decided to go all in. A purposful over bet but he knew I didn't want to bother doing much flop play with any good hands, but to get the chips in early on!

He sat there for 5 minutes and picked up the chips. As he went to put them in, I thought "Oh no, he's going to call, i'm screwed unless I do something". In that split second, I instinctively went for my cards to turn them over as QUICK as possible (without turning over of course). As soon as I did this, he suddenly stopped, and fodled his hand showing me Ace 9 off suit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't believe it. My false tell worked, and once more I showed him my 7-8 just because the guy needed to go on tilt! And this hand certainly put him on it!

Anyway enough of my banter. The hand that got me to 2nd was when a VERY good player who got unlucky gone from 120k to 40k went all with 7 players remaining. I looked at my KK, and had to call his hand (A9). Ah well!

Great tournament! came away with a nice £400, making it the most I've won at a live game!

Night all :P

Very nice, and good move with the all in and "eagerly" trying to flip your cards over to show a "monster hand"

Hope the luck continues for you, is always nice to finish well in a tourney like that.

Thanks very much mate!

It came at a crucial time for me. I haven't played poker too much recently due to time and confidence, but that's made me realise I'm not another fish and I can be a danger!

I'm so glad my false tell worked. I'm not sure still whether it was a bad move to push at that point in time! The only cards that I showed all day was AK, AA, and KK before that point, so why he would call that easily with A9 i'm not too sure to be honest!

Never the less, it was the ONLY hand I was in where I was an underdog pre flop and won the hand! That shows me that it was not just luck, and that I made the right moves at the right times! Don't think as I only showed good cards, I only had good cards. I was able to do enough re raises after weak flops for me to not show my cards! That was the best thing for me! My moves paid off in chips and respect!

=)

Thanks again.

(Btw my luck is continuing! On the way home I stopped at a service station with 4 mates. We all decided to put £5 in the middle, deal a random hand and the winning hand takes the £25, just for fun.... won it with 2 pair on the river

The chips passed his cards but still in his hand holding them in the air.

It was played in a student union venue on behalf of Edinburgh Poker Society, so string betting was allowed etc.... People could also say call, then when realiusing it was a raise fold if they didnt see sooner etc...

It was more relaxed than a casino but a great event.

I'll write a full story and post the link within the next few hours Just for memories etc.. a few funny hands *remember*

One was my AA versus someones KK. The first card was a K on the flop. I turned straight away and swore, and as I walked from the table, the viewers starting shouting and I assumed another K had come out. I went back to the table to see the second card of the flop being an A. Took the pot =)

EUPO (slight correction)

Hey man, its Gordon who came third at the EUPO. Really great summary of the main event, but there's just one thing u got wrong.......
I KNOCKED OUT DAYDD NOT CHRIS!!!!!!! Mwa hahaha. LOL
Remember all the confusion when I had K-K and went all in out of turn?? I got to call in the end and after Dafydd flopping a straight flush draw, my Ks held up!
Anyway, Great tourney, thoroughly enjoyed it, hope to see you on the tables some time soon.
All the best,

GOGS
