Interesting thought - I dunno if it's true, but it's certainly something to think about. You're saying that the only way to become a successful pro these days is to have a big score very early in your career, right? I suppose first thing's first, there's no denying a huge tournament cash (and the attention that comes with it) is a great way to kick start your professional bankroll. It's also about the only way for someone who was previously unknown to get themselves sponsored by a major site, which is obviously a major help to a professional career. In the end I think it really depends on what your definition of "professional" is and what your goals are - do you want to get on TV and earn sponsorship money, or do you just want to win money at poker and keep your anonymity? I'd say it's very difficult to get sponsorship without major tournament cashes but it's certainly possible to become a professional by grinding up from the lowest games in anonymity too and you don't even necessarily need to start young to do that.

I'd say that it is MUCH, MUCH easier to get the momentum when you start off on top. Look at Gus. People still talk about him when he has lost several million this year and guys like Galfond swear that he is the fish at the table. If he started now, he's just not getting signed. But winning two WPT's will get anyone signed.

re: The early bird catches the worm ? poker joe cada is a great example of this. he honestly isnt that good but winning the main event leads to him being sponsored by pokerstars plus he never really needs to worry about money again in his life as long as he is not stupid.

This obviously applies to donkament donks. And yeah, it's pretty much true, if you luckbox a big MTdonkament, you're pretty much established as a "professional" poker player. Meh, screw donkaments. Looking at these guys is like looking at people who won the lottery. Edit: Actually, I think I'll call them MDDs (Multi-Donk Donkaments) as opposed to the long-winded MTdonkaments... Hm... "MDD" sounds a bit like a sexually transmitted disease or a mental illness though :\ Oh well

i was just thinking earlier today that the only way to win is to get an advantage "bigger stack" early on in the game. It seems to be the only way that i win it. otherwise you end up being small stack and you just want to see the flop cause you have the potential for a big hand then you have to go all in to call the other guys who have twice what you so by now how come when you post something it goes all the way to the end of the page?? then its not even by what your commenting about so its making look like a complete idiot cause im rambling about somehting youd have to go four pages away to look at ?? is this happening to everyone.... There is a quote and multi quote function at the bottom right of all the posts. ^^This discussion isn't about whether you need to take a big stack early though, its about whether you need a huge cash early in your career to become pro.

re: The early bird catches the worm ? poker I really do think there's a lot of truth to this. I wonder how many professional players really don't make any money playing poker, they just had one big tournament win and now get sponsored/staked the rest of their career or they're just wealthy already and play a lot of high-stakes poker to get noticed.

Yeah, to get into the freeroll club, here's what ya gotta do... Ya gotta find silly threads like this with loads of silly replies, and then reply hinting at how silly and redundant everyone's reply ITT was, and tell them it's not gonna get them into the freeroll club. Or, if someone has got there first and legitimately post-count-whored the noobs ITT by telling them off, you can post-count-whore by mocking them for doing so Did you get all that, aspiring freerollers? That's some serious CC strategy right there :P |
