Deciding a winner

Hey Guys

Quick question thats been bothering me and a few friends for a few days. If in a game, 3 handed, the chip leader beats both of the two remaining players in one hand, who between the two remaining players who have been eliminated finishes second?

As this is a cash game, my theory would be that the person who had the best hand would finish second as this would have beaten the person who had more chips but a worse hand. However, if it was a league game for points then the person with the most chips would finish second because they have a higher chip count and would have been able to cover the player even though he had the better hand.

For example- in the game im referring too. The Chip Leader had Ace Three of Spades, The Middle Stack had Jack King Off Suit and the Short Stack had Pocket Aces. After a round of betting, the flop came Jack, King, Three. So at present, the middle stack was winning. The next card came another three, then both the middle stack and the short stack went all in, which the chip leader called. The final card was a dead card (4) which meant that the chip leader won with three of a kind of three's..... now the middle stack only had a short amount more than the short stack. Who finishes Second?

Any thoughts on this?

in a tournament the person with more chips comes second
in a cash game, there is no such thing as coming first or second

In this sense I am referring to a cash game being each player pays £10 to play with second place getting a 30% cut of the pot. So there would be 7 players with a pot of £70, with £21 going to second.

Right mate thanks for clearing that up! So in any instance the person with the higher chip count prior to elimination beats the person with the highest rank cards that hand?

Then its a SnG and tournament rules will apply.

Highest stack before the hand will be second.

There is no such thing as a second place hand in any one pot. Higher chip stack takes 2nd no matter whether it's points, money, sex, watermelons, doughnuts, whatever.

Money, sex, watermelons, and donuts... Yet you fail to mention beer.

I concur with the other peeps. You were playing a tournament since it paid places. Maybe there were no escalating blinds or antes, but it was still a tournament. And whoever lost with the biggest stack went out ahead of the smaller stack.

Example.
Player A: Full house, aces over queens, $10,000 in chips. He shoves.
Player B: Top two pair, $1,000 in chips. He calls player A's shove.
Player C: Two pair, $8,000 in chips. He calls.

Yeah, player B had the second best hand, but player C was doing much much better at the time of the call. So when they were both eliminated, whoever was in better shape in the *game* (not the hand) gets the prize. A loss is a loss. It doesn't matter how bad you lose.

This is sort of why we have side pots, because what chips you have going in is vital to what you are entitled to end up with at the end at the end of the hand.

I asked the same question here...

Why did I come in 3rd?

Basically boils down to the fact that there are two pots..

pot 1: players 1,2,3
side pot 2: players 1,2

You look at pot 1 first, if player 1 wins, then player 3 is out (even if his hand is better than player 2's, player 1 is out of $$ at this point)

Now you have the side pot which player 1 also wins and knocks player 2 out (thus leaving player 2 in second place in the prize pool).
