Death of a database...

My 1st PT database was wayyyy too big for my pc to run smoothly, so I'm archiving it and starting a new one.

A little surprised to see just how much money my account has handled...

I thought you were going to tell us a sad tale about how your PT database had been corrupted and was lost forever.

Quick question RE the PT database-- what exactly is happening when you "compact" it?

And isn't the "move to x file when I close this import box" doing something to help as well?

I am saving mine to an external hard drive-- will this help, or are we all doomed to run into ct's problem eventually?

Probably the same as when you pc 'compacts' most things - it is supposedly putting the files in an easier system for it to read (like de-frag).

I always picture all the info being pushed together like when trying to get that last book on the bookcase

I'm more interested in whether ChuckTs has tried it on Ladbrokes / Unibet. Cant get the damn thing to work and when trying to look up help all i find are some programmers snipe comments about it being simple and "the answers are right there". Some bleeding idiot even quoted his Google search time (0,05 sec) without looking at the incomprehensible answers his brillant search had turned up.

Used to work for a database company. When they work, they are great. When they malfunction, the pope couldnt save you. I HATE the friggin things!!!

They are the geeks revenge for the humiliations they are put through when entering real world surroundings :/

As you use Access and add records the pages that store the data end up wasting a ton of space, so compacting it clears out all the wasted space, you should be doing this often.

How big is you PT database? How about you Chuck, had you compacted it on a regular basis?

Only around 23k hands (just started using PT dedicatedly at the beginning of the year).

At about what point should we expect to have to start a new one (assuming regular compacting maintenance)?

Compact it, tell me how big it is in MB and I will figure out its growth expectancy.

Too late to edit. Include your processor speed, hard drive size and amount of RAM and I can figure out how long you have before you are screwed.

If I'm understanding where to look it's 287MB (does that sound about right for 23K hands?). I am saving it to a Western Digital 80GB portable drive.

RAM: 1.93GB
processor: 1.61ghz

287 MB seems huge for that amount of hands.

I will check the size of mine when I get home.

Anyway an Access db can only be 2GB so you have tons of space and you also have plently of RAM to run it when it gets to over 1GB.

When I get home I will figure out how big it should be for 23k hands and expected growth.

Forgot about this thread.

If your current size is correct you will be able to store about 200k hands before it fills up. You have plenty of processing power and space to handle this. Access mdb can only be 2GB before it dies.

When you get to 200k there are ways around having to start a new database. Let me know when you get there.
