Congressional Hearing Provides Momentum to Reverse Internet Gambling Prohibition

In another promising sign for reversing the prohibition of internet gambling, representatives of the U.S. Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and financial services sector testified before Congress yesterday that the proposed rules to implement the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) are unworkable.

The witnesses, including representatives of the American Bankers Association and Financial Services Roundtable, unanimously agreed that U.S. financial services companies would face serious regulatory burdens in attempting to enforce UIGEA, a law that is not likely to stop millions of Americans from gambling online.

We believe that rather than trying to implement a ban that is unclear, burdensome and doomed to fail, Congress should instead look to regulate Internet gambling.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that these people are on your side.
What they're trying to do is regulate US poker even more than it is now, AFAIK.

What? The Justice Department says it falls under the wire act and therefore is illegal. Many States are making it illegal including mine where it is a felony. I myself would welcome regulation. No rigged controversy, less fly by night casinos and not having to worry if the bank is going to sieze my winnings or worse, the State is going to arrest me.

Do you have many casinos over there that fly by night?

I'm just trying to point out that these people are not necessarily acting in your best interests, I live in England where we have far too much of a nanny state, more regulation is not necessarily a good thing, and you might just be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. No, again, but he is mistaken if he thinks eChecks are going to stay once the rules of UIGEA are enforced (if current legislation is not changed). Not only will his monies be blocked but the bank will cancel his account.

And I am saying that I would gladly trade the way that the U.S. and Washington State in particular handle Online Poker with England any day in an instant. I think you need to realize that online Poker is a "CRIME" here. Not regulated, simply illegal, sieze my money, go to jail.

Pretty sure he meant fly by night Online casinos. Land based casinos are heavily regulated here and have to account money exactly to the penny as well as have all games randomly checked to insure they are not rigged. (main concern is slots being rigged)

For the life of me I can't figure the reasoning behind any of those state laws.
Many will attribute those laws to addiction prevention. I'll buy that argument when they consider the obnoxious accumulation of money an addiction. By that I am thinking those who make billions a year, not someone seeking financial security.

To clarify, we are a group that is simply trying to get Congress to do the right thing on this issue.

I respect the post from the chap in England, but dont think he should criticize our efforts. In England, internet gambling is legal and regulated. You dont have to worry about finding a bank to process your transaction or worry that you have no legal recourse if you feel that you have been taken advantage of.

We believe Congress should regulate Internet gambling, not to make it more difficult for people to gamble online, but as a way to make sure that we have the legal right to do so and all the protections that should be afforded when processing a financial transaction online.
