Basically you sit down with an amount of money between the minimum and maximum buy-in (set by the site) and you play!
you can sit out or leave whenever you like
same rules as tournaments, but blinds obviously don't go up
in limit, it is suggested that you sit down with 200 or 300 times the Big bet ( 2X the Big blind )
in NL, you should buy-in with the maximum amount possible - it will have a set maximum

the play in ring games is a little different than tournaments - i'm more of a tourney player so you'll have to ask someone else for strategy, but it's basically the same

Your bankroll should be between 200 or 300 the big bet, at least. Your buyin should preferably be somewhere around 20-30 big bets (I buy in for 30BBs in a limit game, and restock if I drop below 15, at which point I toss in another 20 big bets).

One thing I should add: Never sit down with less than 12 big bets, and always restock if you fall below that. 12 bets happens to be the maximum you can lose in one hand, and it's absolutely ridiculously stupid to sit there with the nuts and not be able to extract maximum value for it. Since poker is usually measured in measly numbers as bets/100 hands played (and the winrate is virtually always below 4 big bets/100), the bets that you missed out on because you failed to rebuy chips could negate an entire hour's worth of winning play. Silly, isn't it?

as in NL, Doyle Brunson says he always sits down with more money than the biggest stack there - how else could he bust him if he didn't have as much as him?
