Buying my first poker book

I play mostly SNGS but want to advance into cash games(.25/.50+). What all around book should i buy and why? I was thinking i should get harrington on hold em, seems to be the all around best from what i hear.

HoH is by far the best tourney book I've ever read. All the goodies about low-M play, blind stealing, shorthanded play etc etc

I haven't read any books specifically on ring play, so maybe someone else could help out with that.

Small Stakes Hold'em. Period.

Second book should be HOH1 but SSHE helps set things up first.

Sklansky/Miller No limit hold 'em Theory and Practice Has a lot of good info on not beating yourself, adjusting for different playing types and a whole lot more. I also like Gordon's little green book too.

I've got HOH1 and Gordon's Little Green book, and read Supersystem I, Ace on the river and a few others from the library.

For my money, HOH1 is the best of the ones I've read, even though it's tourney focused.

From what I've heard, I don't know that you need more Brunson aggression, misch.

NL TAP is a very good book but I wouldn't recommend it as your first. The material is quite dense and requires quite a bit of previous ring game experience in order for the concepts to really take hold. He gets you to examine the roots of your game, and if you don't have any I imagine you'll just get confused. I voted HoH v1. Very accessible and easy to apply and very relevant to your game play at the moment.

Definitely HOH1, it's a tournament book, but harrington advocates tight aggressive play and it's more or less applicable to cash games NL. It was my first poker book, took me from a losing player to slightly winning.

Read every one you can get your hands on.

HOH1 - This book should even be reread from time to time.

I've read HOH1, HOH2, Online Ace, Theory of Poker, and currently workingon HOH3, so I can only pick between those.

I would definitely say HOH 1 is a good 1st poker book and then it's probably best to just go right on to HOH 2 and then HOH 3. I should have done that.

I am interensted if anybody knows of a book devoted solely to ring games. I would like to pick one of those up.

What's HOH?

I like Killer Poker online and Killer poker online 2. They weren't fantastic books but i learned a few thing about keeping book on opponents and a few other things that improved my game. So, I thought they were worth mentioning. However, the author states you should have a good foundation in poker before reading them. They show how to adapt your game to online play instead of much actual poker theory. Nonetheless, I thought someone else might enjoy them too.

I got SS1 and 2, and 1000 best by Suzie Isaacs, the 1000 best is a good quick refresher course as it comes in small discrete chunks.

SS1 &2 cover much of the same stuff, perhaps the charts at the back of SS1 are worth the book price, which is steep.

I have read HOH1 or rather am almost through with it. I also just bought Caros book of poker tells which i hear is a must have for any serious poker player's collection. And I got Johnny Chans book on low limit holdem which i havent read yet. I can say HOH1 is a great read, and contains alot of information and that would be the number 1 book to get for learning the game according to me. I think even though it is focused on tournaments, it still teaches you alot about pot odds, table position, and starting hands, as well as some strategies that work quite well when implemented properly.

I really enjoyed HOH1 and found it interesting.

I read Online Ace...not a great book really. Just covers how to win at SNGs mainly and although it has some good info, there is more of it in HOH1.

I also read Nagreanu's poker tips (can't remember exact title). Not a bad quick read but didn't get a whole lot out of it.

Def recommend HOH1 but there could be a better book focusing on ring games.

This is the best advice. Once you read one or two you'll find it hard to not want to read them all.

HoH = Harrington on Holdem. Dan Harrington's three volumes are easily three of the best books ever written on tournament play, IMO.

You can't go wrong by choosing HoH1. It is a must read, even if it is about tournament play.

If you're strictly playing online, start with Doyle's Online Poker. There's good tips on cash game play there,too. HOH is a terrific read for tourney players by probably the best tourney strategist ever.

If you are trying to transition into small stakes and micro limits I most def. recommend Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play by David Sklansky.

You should definitely get 'Pot-Limit & No-Limit Poker' by Stewart Reuben & Bob Ciaffone, which mainly covers cash poker. Quite in-depth.
