80/20 Situations Found to lose 20% of the time

According to a recent study by Phil Hellmuth Jr. and “some of the other top poker pros”, situations where a hand is a 4-to-1 favorite are expected to lose 20% of the time, or one in five. “This was a really big shock to me, and I’m sure it was a big shock to the poker community,” said Hellmuth, clearly in dismay over this news. “I mean, I get it in good and this donkey sucks out on me. It’s so sick. Wait, what?”

Christopher “Jesus” Ferguson had only this to say on the matter: “So?”. Brilliant words from one the poker greats.

It has not been confirmed that these findings hold true online as well, although early research seems to suggest that the percentages are in fact true for Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker. Evidence to the contrary was in fact presented by Tom “Durrrr” Dwan Thursday, when he revealed that over his 4 million hand database he has won 73% of ‘coinflip’ situations and slightly over 45% of situations where he was a 4-to-1 underdog. These findings cast some doubt over the validity of the percentages in online poker.

According to a recent poll that posed the question, “Do you feel that in situations where your hand is an 80/20 favorite in online poker, your all in expected value differs in a statistically significant way from your actual all in winnings? In the results from about 73,000 responses, 4% said yes, 29% said “no” or “it’s all rigged” or “the government is watching O_o”, and 67% said “What’s expected value?”.

We will continue to update as more information becomes available.

I'm afraid I fall in the Ferguson camp as well. My bet isn't completely determined by the odds. Play good cards, and stay away from the all-in bet as much as possible.

This is very interesting and makes me question the validity of online poker. I play on full tilt and lately it seems like the 4-1 underdog wins about 50% of hands

I really dislike ambiguous thread titles like that, because I am forced to enter the thread to find out what it's about, and often subsequently wish that I hadn't bothered...
