Book Review - Daniel Negreanu's Holdem Wisdom for all players

I can play poker, I am not a great poker player, in fact I think my average game is less than average.
My Bankroll management sucks, I make far too many mistakes, my reads aren't an art and I still have trouble laying down a monster hand when I am almost certain I am beat.

So I decided to start a collection of poker books.

I have quite the collection already and just received a shipment from Amazon.

One of them is Daniel Negreanu's Holdem wisdom for all players.

All I can say is wow! anyone who wants to go pro, be a better player, take more money from their friends, have an edge or just has an intense love for the game needs to get this book.

Its filled to the brim full of useful tidbits.

from top 10 mistakes beginners do to 10 things to watch out for when talking at a table.

All seriously rich little nuggets of advice.

I tend to shy away from books that hurtle headlong into talking about percentages and profit margins and rake per hour and math orientated babble as I am seriously not a numbers person and this book is not like that at all.

In my opinion there are 2 ways to play poker, by whats happening around you and whats happening in the game.

Chris Ferguson is a person that plays the numbers of poker, he knows every single percentage, he knows when it would be profitable to make a call to chase a draw and when to give up a bad chase. He is afterall, a mathematician. I would think that Howard Lederer is classed into the same category.

Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow amongst others are players that play people poker and play the psychology aspect and go for lots of small pots (small ball)

Doyle Brunson always said that when you play poker, you play the person. and thats the route I prefer.

Chris Ferguson will beat you because he knows the odds are good for him to call.

Daniel Negreanu will beat you because he knows what you are holding thanks to great reading skills and a profound understanding of the psychology of poker

This little gem of a book is orientated slightly towards the psychology of poker as opposed to the theory of poker.

Topics he covers :

Top 10 rookie mistakes
how to handle bullies
how to play suited cards
The top 10 trouble hands - he goes on to explain why KJ is a dangerous hand, and why AQ is not a hand to go all in with.
how and when to play trash hands (72 off)
The value of aggression
creating and manipulating your table image
When to fold pocket aces
effective shorthanded and heads up play
how to effectively slow play monster hands for maximum return.

and many others.

I read this book and immediately won a million dollars.

(ok not really but lets pretend)

You need to get this book!

I love your first paragraph, I resemble that remark, lol. I'll have to read this book. I love watching Daniel play, his reads are great, but I think he has the same trouble in laying down monsters when hes beat as us poor folk.

What other books have you read that you can compare it to, rrr?

I might pick it up, but if it's just another book that reiterates other beginner books' points then it might not be worth it...anyways glad it worked out for you

Chuck, its not a beginners book per say, its a slightly more advanced book that I think even seasoned veterans will read and go "aahhhh" from time to time.

Closest book I could compare it to would have to be Lou Krieger's "52 Great Poker Tips: At Home, Tournament and Online"
