Rounders is a little too trendy...this is the first poker movie I ever saw and (arguably) the best. It's my favorite anyways:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060165/ It's called A Big Hand For a Little Lady, a comedy starring Henry Fonda and Joanne Woodward. I love it. It's a really great con movie. |

If you haven't seen Rounders and you like to play Texas Holdem then you need to get it right away.
I definately think Rounders is the best Poker movie out there. Why? Because they do a good job of teaching some of the BASICS (and I mean BASICS) of the game...and there is enough poker game sequences to really make it stand out among other poker "stories". Ed and Matt actually played in a tourney to get a "feel" for their characters. It's not the only movie, but it's the best. |

LOL, from someone at a poker chat site.
Anyway, everyone has different opinions about whats better in entertainment. I would suggest that if you haven't seen the Cincinati Kid that you rent it and check it out. It's not Hold-em, it's 5 card stud but it's 40 years ago. One of the best lines aobut poker ever uttered is said in this movie. Bonus point for anyone that gets it and who said it. List doesn't count since he obviously knows it. |

Well I think I'm talking about the best, one that is often repeated in play even today. I don't want to say too much and give it away, I want to see if anyone can get it. Message me with what you think it is List.

this thread inspired me to watch Rounders again this evening, and while I agree with the poker info within it, for the first time I realized that, as a movie, it really isn't good. There are a lot of things that don't make sense to me.
1. His girlfriend is such a bitch. I never bought their relationship. Why would his character be with her? Stupid. 2. He continually supports his friend Worm throughout the movie even after getting screwed over again and again, and again. Why would he do that? Stupid. 3. The professor would never give out 10 grand like that. I don't care how much he knows Mike as a student, it just doesn't happen. Stupid. 4. The music is way overdone and obvious. 5. It's never explained what happens to Worm. Stupid. 6. It hints at an attraction between Mike and Petra but never goes anywhere with it. Why not? Stupid. 7. After he busts Teddy in the final scene, Grama gets all pissed off and throws chairs and such. This doesn't make sense. He got his money. Why is he pissed off? Stupid. Little plot holes like these add up and take me out of the movie. I'm so sorry for overanalyzing. |

ok, my submission for best line in a poker movie is from "The Cincinati Kid"
players are at the table playing 5 card stud. A fill player and Edward G. Robinsone are in a hand. The fill player looks at his notebook, does some math in the book and makes an exact bet of some odd figure. Edward G. calls the bet and the fill player folds, saying "it doesn't mater what I have if he can call me he wins" He then says "you were supposed to fold to that bet, how could you call?" Edward G. answers: "As the man once said, you paid to see the cards, lessons are extra." |

Just to back up Rounders a bit...there may be some plot holes...but I don't think anything major.
It is one of my favorite movies, but I wouldn't put it in classic movie realm or a best of all-time movie. But I own it and enjoy it. Sometimes I'll watch it while I'm playing online. |
