Bankroll Management Guide

Bankroll Management is a huge part in whether your a winning player or a losing player who will eventually go broke. I am really going to just focus on playing 1 table at a time instead of playing 3-4 tables. I have done a little research and I seem to really like that if your only going to play 1 table at a time, than buying into a cash game for 10% of your bankroll seems to me to be ok. I would have to lose 10 consecutive buy ins to go broke. So I have came up with a BRM that I will test and and see how it works out. This is a guide for cash games only. I dont know what would be a good tourney Bankroll Management.
The Bankroll Management Guide
* 500 Big Bets of the next limit to move up. (Big bet is double the big blind)
ie: To move up to .02/.05 BB*500= Amount need to move up
.02/.05 big bet is .10 .10*500=$50.00
So i would need to get a $50.00 BR to move up to .02/.05
* 250 Big Bets in the limit I am currently playing at is when I move down in
limits.
ie: Need to move down to .02/.05 from .05/.10 BB*250= Amount need to
move down
.05/.10 big bet is .20 .20*250=$50.00
When my BR reaches $50 I move back down in limits to .02/.05
* If at any time the money at the current table I am playing at represents more than 10% of my current BR. I must play through the blinds and leave the table.
ie: BR is at $30.00 Bankroll*10%= Amount I must leave table
Playing .01/.02 I buy in for $2.00 30*.10=$3.00
After 20 minutes i win a big pot that put my table amount around 3.65. Once I am on the button I will finish the hand through and leave.
* Once I lose 2 buy ins must quit for the day or at least a few hours.

10 buyins or 10% of your bankroll is pretty loose; standard minimum is more like 20 - 30, ie. $200 for $10 buyin at a 0.05/0.10 table. And there are people who prefer more.


And this is regardless of how many tables you play at one time. You may want to have more if you play more than one table at a time, but that doesn't mean you should use less if you play one.


That being said, the lower the level you play, the easier it is to not lose, if you're patient, and the easier it is to back the bankroll with a willingness to redeposit. I started with $50 playing the $10 tables, but that was knowing that I was willing to redeposit, and I wanted an achievable $50 first deposit bonus (ie. if I had deposited $100 I would have to earn a $100 bonus and was ineligible for a $50 bonus; PS didn't pay out in increments of bonus earned)

how do you apply this to sng's and mtt's?

I honestly dont know but for tourney play i would use the chris ferguson bankroll management for tourneys. 5 percent of my total bankroll (there is an exception for the lowest limits: I'm allowed to buy into any game with a buy-in of $2.50 or less). I won't buy into a multi-table tournament for more than 2 percent of my total bankroll and I'm allowed to buy into any multi-table tournament that costs $1

I like to mulittable so I need more back up money. I keep 1000 big blinds in the cashier and keep another 1000 big blinds in my poker bank account which is money I can deposit immediately. I have never had to deposit in the middle of a downswing, but I would suggest doing so instead of dropping limits if you normally win at the current level but are just having a downswing. You will have a downswing no matter what level you play and as long as you can beat the level you are playing and don't tilt from a downswing, I would continue playing there. Moving up is a bit tricky. If you have 1000 big blinds at the new level you should be okay playing one table, but I usually add extra tables at the present level to build up the bankroll so I can handle the new level. I would like about 3-4 extra buyins in my cashier to allow for the better play at the new level. Also if you start getting clobbered at the new level look at your HH's and see if you are leaking money by making little mistakes or you are being outplayed. You can always fix the leaks but if the competition is too hard at the new level, you might be better off not moving up.
