Bankroll Management

I've heard a lot of different theories for bankroll management. Some people have told me that I should buy in anywhere from 5%-10% of my bankroll... Which seemed relatively high. I've also heard anywhere from 1%-2% which seems pretty low. I tend to do around 5% and have done pretty well. But I am very curious as to what most consider the correct amount.

I don't think that you are supposed to buy in for those amounts but that they are suggested maximums that you should limit yourself to. Never put more than 10% of your stack into any one tourney or ring game. When I actually have a stack to work with 10% is my max for any ring game(but usually considerably less) and 5% is my max for any MTT or SNG. Google "The Ferguson" the article I'm talking about is on fulltiltpoker.com. Chris Ferguson has a pretty good system when he built his stack from nothing. At least worth the read.

I don't know if there really is a right answer to how much you should be playing with. I always thought it all depends on how many tables you play and how much you wouldn't mind losing. I don't particularly believe there's a certain percentage that should tell you how much you should have on the table. For instance, if you play 50 NL and you play about 10 tables at once, you've got 500 in play. Would you mind losing 4 or 5 buy-ins in one session? If you would then maybe it would be more profitable to play more tables at a smaller limit? As long as you have at least 50 buy ins of whatever limit you're playing you are ok. If you fall below that 50 buy-ins I'd move down in limits til you have enough buy-ins to move up. I wouldn't worry as much about the percentage of your bankroll you have in play.

re: Bankroll Management poker

with tourneys you need more cushion, since the variance in those things is insane

cash games i would say save 10 buying behind and drop down if you lose 2 (obv only if you can reload, if whatever is in your account is everything you will ever have online be more careful)

i don't know what percentage i buy in with, but i only play with an amount that won't hurt so much if i loose it.
