BAD HABITS LATE IN TOURNEYS Can anyone tell me how to disipline myself late in tourneys. I have a bad habit of playing marginal starting hands in bad position late in tourneys (particularly short stacked trying to flop a maricle). I know how to play but sometimes I just have a hard time folding a hand like Q 9 suited in middle position. I also usually go out on a completely dominated Ace, a lot of times I am really short stacked but I could wait for a better hand than A 3. Any ideas, can I rent someone to slap me upside the head and snap me out of it. I have played cash games @casinos and I would never play like that. blaine213

simple - just stick to the Sklansky starting groups and play your hands according to position. Also pay attention to your M ratio and get take desperate measures according to your M. No one can force you to be disciplined other than yourself. Try this : get one of those thick rubber bands and slip it onto your wrist, everytime youre about to call hoping for a miracle flop, snap yourself till it smarts and your eyes water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-ratio

Just keep in mind if you still have chips you still have a chance. Like the others just don't over play the bad hands. I probably am too patient or maybe just to conservative I seem to give away to many blinds. Anyway I hope you have a good year.

I don`t think there is anything wrong when late in a tourny u have about 10 big blinds left, push allin and get beat by a bigger ace than your A3. I always want to win the tourny, and you will rarely win a tourny with 10 big blinds as you creep into the $$$. It does cost me sometimes when I have been playing for 4 hours and I bubble, but over time it is worth it - IMO

I for one disagree, I dont play poker to limp into the money, I want to win and by shoving with hands like A3 off in an uncontested pot in mid to late, I am going for gold, picking off chips and antes from people who want to just limp into the money |

Later in the tourneys, the most aggressive players are usually the people who get into the money. If people are limping and your in late position, ace high is probably a good hand to raise with. Q 9 suited is a decent hand, id say its worth limping as long as there are no aggressors especially with a low stack in late tourney because you can hit a good flop and maybe win, if not fold. People might not agree with Q 9 middle with low stack, but you gotta play hands or get out. The biggest mistake players make in late tourney is either folding too much or calling too much. To be folding Q 9 suited low stacked makes me think your folding too much and have too much doubt in yourself, think what the big stacks and others are calling with hoping to hit a flop and get a bigger stack.
